The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has recently announced that it will set up a US-backed paramilitary unit to safeguard its vast mining sector. The initiative which is reportedly backed by investments from the United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is not only aimed at protecting critical mineral supply chains, but also securing extraction sites and mineral transport routes amid ongoing instability in the country's eastern regions.
