Concerns that Botswana may breach its debt ceiling unless fiscal deficits are reduced

View descriptionShare

The World Bank's Macro Poverty Outlook 2025 has shown that Botswana may breach its debt ceiling unless fiscal deficits are reduced. The government of Botswana recently acquired two loans from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund (BPOPF), amounting to 532 million dollars. The Southern African country's economy contracted by 3% in 2024 largely due to the diamond market downturn. Thami Ngubeni spoke to an Independent Economist, Tshepo Kgadima.
