Petroleum companies BP and Sasol have applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for a 105% tariff increase for their petroleum storage facility for the 2026 financial year. In their submission, the companies point to a sharp decline in fuel consumption over the past decade, which has reduced revenue and placed growing pressure on South Africa’s more than 4 600 fuel forecourts.

Government data show petrol consumption fell from 12 billion litres in 2015 to 8.7 billion litres in 2024, while diesel use declined from 14 billion to 11.8 billion litres over the same period. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Energy Analyst Tshepo Kgadima.
