Just over two weeks after Peter Mutharika was sworn in as Malawi's president, his government has dissolved all boards of parastatal organisations and state-owned enterprises.

 Days after the dissolution of the boards governing State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the Department of Statutory Corporations issued an immediate blanket suspension of all recruitment and major procurements across all parastatal organisations and SOEs saying the move is aimed at preventing irregularities during the governance vacuum.

Mauritius has recently introduced a Golden Visa programme priced at $1 million, targeting wealthy investors and entrepreneurs. Introducing the programme, the country’s Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, said it offers five‑day processing and aims to attract 100 applicants annually. Investors are required to invest at least $1 million within a year in sectors such as AI, fintech, biotechnology, renewable energy and global treasury services.

Mauritius sets its sights on attracting 100 wealthy migrants annually with a newly launched $1 million golden visa programme

After noting with concern that citizens in Nigeria do not have access to reliable mechanisms to properly scrutinise the national budget, economist Tolu Olarewaju conducted research focused on budget transparency, corruption and digital public‑monitoring systems in the country.

The research further highlighted challenges associated with the citizens’ portal created and operated by the country’s Budget Office of the Federation, which is reportedly often offline. The study argues that limited access to budget information undermines the social contract between citizens and government.

Dr Tolu Olarewaju, an Economist, Researcher and Lecturer in management at Keele University, now joins us to share more insight.
