Africa urged to use uncultivated arable land to reduce reliance on food imports

View descriptionShare

Africa holds most of the world's uncultivated arable land, but remains a net food importer, with imports standing at over $40 billion annually. ABSA Bank says the continent must move beyond donor dependency and mobilise capital for climate-smart agriculture. And also emulate successful models, like Kenya's tea cooperatives, Ivory Coast's cashew strategy, and South Africa's use of genetically modified (GM) crops. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Abrie Rautenbach, Managing Executive: Sector Head Agriculture, Absa Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB).
