A federal court has blocked former President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, ruling they exceeded his legal authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The U.S. Court of International Trade found that Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on nearly all trading partners was unconstitutional. The decision halts the so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs, including those on China, Canada, and Mexico. While some tariffs remain under other trade laws, this ruling is a major blow to Trump’s trade agenda. The administration plans to appeal.
