Starting May 5, the U.S. Department of Education will resume collections on defaulted federal student loans for the first time since the pandemic. This move affects over 5 million borrowers who have not made payments in over 270 days. The collection process includes wage garnishment and seizing federal payments like tax refunds and Social Security benefits.
