Federal investigators say a fire truck involved in a runway collision at LaGuardia Airport was not equipped with a transponder, limiting air traffic controllers’ ability to accurately track its position. The National Transportation Safety Board said the lack of real-time visibility reduced situational awareness as the vehicle entered an active runway. The incident caused no serious injuries, but investigators also noted it has renewed scrutiny of ground safety practices, including staffing levels in airport operations and the control tower.
