Gordian Worms
Dr Watson has gone off on a tangent and is talking about Gordian Worms tonight. These thread-like worms are found all over the world in still water bodies, often appearing after rain. Their larvae are consumed by host number one (fish, insects etc) and develop into cysts in their bodies. When the first host is eaten by a second host (eg a spider or grasshopper), the cysts break open and the larvae penetrate the gut of the host, slowly absorbing the host's body contents as they develop into adult worms. The adults eventually cause the host's abdomen to explode, usually when it is near a water body.
