Tinamou
This week's Bird Of The Week is the Tinamou. This a ground dwelling bird found only in Central and Sth America. Tinamous lay beautifully coloured, glossy eggs (colour varies, depending on the species) and it is the male that incubates the eggs and raises the chicks. Adult Tinamous and their chicks have spots, stripes and barring to help them camouflage easily into their habitat when required so it is a bit of a mystery why their eggs are so brightly coloured and often laid in very open spaces. One theory is that is makes the male more likely to sit tight on the nest and incubate the eggs well.
