It is the first Tuesday in November—the race that stops the nation! While millions of Australians are placing a casual sweepstake or picking a horse by its jockey silks, serious breeders and punters know that winning a brutal 3,200-metre test comes down to pure genetic science.

In this special Melbourne Cup Day episode, we drop in live to a Cup function to speak with resident veterinarian Dr Andrew Cornwell, owner of Cardiff and Cameron Park Veterinary Hospitals. We uncover how elite bloodlines, stamina genetics, and big-race temperament produce champions—and what casual punters should look for on the racecard!

Key Highlights:

The Blueprint of a Champion: How bloodlines dictate a horse's cardiopulmonary capacity, stamina-to-speed ratio, and calm focus under high-pressure crowd conditions.

Art Meets Genetic Science: How modern breeders pair top-tier stallions and mares using genetic testing to optimize performance while avoiding inbreeding risks.

The Grueling 3,200m Test: Why breeding a true "stayer" requires a unique genetic mix of extreme cardiovascular endurance and explosive final-turn sprint power.

Pedigree Tips for Bettors: How to read a horse's sire line to spot natural distance preference and track condition advantages on Cup Day.
