Told that with rooftop solar and big home batteries, we can all easily pull the plug on the power company and wave goodbye to electricity bills forever? Think again! In this episode, we look at the hidden financial traps, maintenance headaches, and built-environment realities of going off-grid with architecture and built environment expert Dr. Peyman Akhgar from Griffith University.

The Upfront Capital Hurdle: Why the steep initial cost of heavy-duty battery storage systems and backup generators stops most households from completely disconnecting.

The Hidden Costs of Independence: Trading fluctuating network tariffs for ongoing equipment replacement burdens (batteries and inverters) and the risk of power shortages during poor weather.

Location Dictates Economics: Why fully disconnecting makes practical and financial sense in remote areas, but is extremely difficult to justify in standard urban suburbs with reliable shared infrastructure.

The "Near Off-Grid" Hybrid Future: How everyday households are moving toward a model of daily self-sufficiency while maintaining a secure grid connection as a safety net.

Equity & Policy Challenges: The looming policy dilemma of ensuring network costs don't unfairly fall entirely on renters and lower-income families who cannot afford solar.
