Local filmmaker Talia Spears-Liddle chatted with 8CCC's Kate Lyons-Dawson about her short film Protest on the Dancefloor, screening this Sunday at 2pm at Araluen Art Centre as part of MASIFF.

Recently the recipient of the 2026 Uncle Jack Charles Award at MIFF and named among the contenders for Best Short Film at the 2027 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards, Talia developed the short through the Sovereign Shorts partnership between VicScreen, NITV, and MIFF, featuring artists like Paul Gorrie, Nayuka Gorrie, and Skye Thomas.

Protest on the Dancefloor was written and directed by Talia and explores how Blackfellas in Melbourne use music and dancefloors to create spaces of sovereignty, connection and liberation amidst an ever-changing political climate.
