What a Tuesday night for Boerne sports…

Let’s start with Champion water polo- these guys are on a roll. With wins by both teams this week, that advances them to the regional semifinals later this week. Both games will be on Friday at the Southwest ISD… the girls will go first at 3:30 against Harlan, and the boys at 5 will play Brennan.

Get the brooms out for another Geneva Eagles sweep… volleyball took a 3-set victory against Incarnate Word from Corpus Christi. They move to a perfect 2-0 in district. 

The Greyhounds and Chargers faced off in another district battle… the first time was at Boerne High, now the venue was Champion with a full house, standing room only… I mean you couldn’t get a seat for this game. It didn’t disappoint… Champion won the game in 4 sets… with the Greyhounds fighting until the end. Champion is 9-2 in district, sitting in 2nd place in the standings.

Jaxon Baize from Greyhound football is getting some recognition… Yesterday, he announced on X that he was selected to be a player in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Game, and that he was on the Top Football Athletes in 2025 by LoneStarPreps.com. The San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game will take place January 11 at the Alamodome.

It’s Wednesday October 16th. 

On this day in Radio History, KDKA in Pittsburgh applied for the first commercial radio license in 1920. It made its debut on November 2nd, announcing the winner of the presidential election that term, Warren G Harding. 

And just so you know, as KDKA is now 104 years old, Bofars Media Group celebrates our first 4 years of Boerne Radio - and here’s to another 100 more.

The City of Boerne has issued a public safety warning about a potential rabid fox in the area. The Boerne Animal Care Service received a phone call regarding a fox that was aggressively approaching animals and acting strange around bags of dirt. A woman was also bitten by a fox yesterday in her yard near School Street and West Cibolo Drive, and authorities believe it is the same fox. In the coming days, stay vigilant with your pets by keeping them inside, secure your chickens, and don’t approach any wildlife, just call Boerne Animal Care Services at 830-249-2456. 

The Kendall County Commissioners Court has officially reinstated the Burn Ban after more than a month with no rain. That means outdoor burning is not permitted, and if you are a welder, you need to make sure you are within code.

Day 1 Bags - a non profit birthed right here in Boerne is holding their Beyond the Bag Campaign next month in honor of National Adoption Month. Day 1 Bags goal is to deliver 1,000 high-quality stuffed animals and dolls to fill the seats of the juror box during their adoption at the courthouse. During the ceremony, children are able to adopt a furry friend of their choice as they themselves are brought into a loving home. Currently they have 900 stuffed animals, but would love to meet their goal before the end of the month. You can donate to Day 1 Bags directly, or you can check out their Amazon wishlist.

Boerne Radio - News, October 16, 2024

But It’s Tuesday October 15th. 

It was on this date in 1924 that the Statue of Liberty was proclaimed a national monument. The gift from the French was dedicated in 1886 and was originally conceived as a monument to commemorate the centennial celebration of America’s independence from the British. At the base of the statue is a poem “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” written by Emma Lazarus who was Jewish and from Germany, and on Lady Liberty’s tablet the date 1776 in Roman numerals…seems like the French were really sticking it to the English. 

Just sayin’...but still grateful…

Hey amateur stargazers! This week the Su-chi-chan Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet will be visible just after sunset each day until Friday. The hurling chunk of rock and ice will be within 44 million miles of Earth, meaning we’ll be able to view it from our backyards but even better with binoculars. In order to get the best view, go outside 40 minutes after the sunsets and look out west. Once you find Venus, shift your gaze slightly to the right until you see something that looks like a hazy star with a tail. Kendall County Friends of the Night Sky and Boerne Star contributor Jack Estes took a picture from his backyard in Boerne that we’ve posted on our news blog but he wanted to note the photograph pulls out the colors more than the naked eye…Jack also shared a quote when describing the comet…

If you miss it this week, the comet will be back in 80,000 years.

The Hill Country Pregnancy Center is in desperate need of items for their boutique, especially for the little ones in our County. Currently they are in need of new pajamas, size 9m to 2T for girls, and 6 to 12m and 2T to 5T for boys. They are also looking for children’s shoes size 3 to 5, and any new fall clothing up to size 5T. If you have items your child hasn’t worn, or have extra room in your Amazon cart, you can drop them off at the Center or ship them directly. The HCPCC is located on Fabra Street just off of North Main. 

There’s a new deputy in town…Juan Acosta was officially sworn in as a deputy for the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office last Friday, and if you see Deputy Acosta buy his lunch and welcome him to Kendall County.
