President Grover Cleveland was born on this date in 1837, and was the first Democrat voted into office after the Civil War. Up until last November, he was the only President in history to have served two nonconsecutive terms - #22 and #24, and the only President to be married in the White House - he was 49…and she was 21.  Player.

The Wednesday version of the Boerne Star is out today and here are you headlines…

A dozen acres of land including a wellness center with a Junior Olympic sized pool owned by the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne on Highlands Drive will be going up for sale soon.

Eighth grade Geneva Debate Team held an in-house debate tournament and the topic was AI - the benefits of the use of AI vs the harm.  The winning team included Campbell Yarbrough, Charlotte Gerech, and Wesley Izzo. Top speaker went to Claire Halinski.

 

High School Seniors! Friday is your last opportunity to submit scholarship applications to the Boerne Chamber of Commerce.  There are five scholarships total, with each amounting to $2,000. You can apply by clicking the link posted in the Boerne Radio news blog at boerneradio.com.

The Kendall County Fire Department is hiring!  They are looking for dedicated individuals ready to serve their community with pride, discipline, and teamwork. There is one firefighter position open, and you will need TCFP Basic Structural Firefighter training and DSHS EMT Basic training. This position responds out of the Comfort VFD station and supports all-hazards response, including fires, medical calls, vehicle accidents, floods, and natural disasters. 

 

Last week, Judge Stolarczyk rode along with Meals on Wheels driver Barbara to observe first hand the impact that the Meals on Wheels program has on our community. Each week they provide 1000s of meals within the community, specifically for the elderly population within the county. He is the first of hopefully many officials riding along to help out the program.

Boerne Greyhound baseball had themselves a big night against Smithson Valley. Final score in the game was 4-1 Hounds… and Jackson Grimes on the bump as the pitcher struck out 11 batters and only gave up a single hit the entire game. 

If you’ve been following the World Baseball Classic and cheering for the USA, bad news as last night, the dominant tournament run came to an end in the final. Venezuela wins a competitive 3-2 game to win the WBC, and the drought for the USA continues. 

The UT Longhorn men have won their First Four game against NC State 68-66, and are now in the round of 64 tomorrow in Portland, Oregon, as they face #6 seed BYU at 6:25. First Four March Madness games continue today- Prairie View A&M will face Lehigh at 5:30, and 1-loss Miami of Ohio will face SMU following around 8:15.

The Spurs defeat the Kings on the road, 132-104 the final score. A new franchise record was set with 25 made three pointers in a single game.

And it’s Saint Patrick’s Day!

 

And while we think of an Irish guy who rid Ireland of snakes and taught the trinity with a shamrock...the true story is that he was the son of senator and deacon growing up in Britain who was kidnapped by pirates who took him to Ireland as a teenager and used him as a slave.  It was there he found God, which led to his devine escape.  In his 20s he became a priest and felt the call from a dream to return to Ireland as a missionary.

After 17 years of helping introduce the world to our city, Visit Boerne's Director, Larry Woods, is officially retiring at the end of this month.Visit Boerne is the City’s destination marketing department, which advertises Boerne as a tourist destination and is entirely funded by hotel occupancy tax revenue. The sales tax generated from these visitors allows Boerne to buy more fire trucks, hire more police officers, invest in parks and enhance our quality of life. Larry’s career spans 57 years, with highlights including helping bring a full service hotel to Boerne-the Bevy- and winning the Marion Szurek Leadership award. Larry plans to stay active in the field through consulting and mentoring while enjoying the place he’s spent so long telling everyone about.

 

For our Fair Oaks Folks, Cibolo Creek Bridge will be reduced to one lane under two-way traffic control. The planned work during this time will consist of milling the existing pavement and placing the overlay…operations are expected to occur from 8 to 5 until Friday. Expect delays and drive carefully in the zone.

 

Lots of events this week in Boerne, tomorrow it’s Men’s night at the Free Roam,  Thursday is Boerne Radio’s Boost Boerne Business networking event at Cavender Chevrolet from 4-6, and looking head on Saturday March 28th it’s the biggest Garage Sale in the history of Garage Sales hosted by the Kendall County Fair Association.  Doors open at 8 - still time to get your own booth at kcfa.org.
