Headlines: Geneva Football Honorable Mention/Player Of The Year/Spurs overtime

Today’s report is all-Geneva as the Eagles have been really dominant recently.

Yesterday, as reported by Geneva, football players were named for honorable mentions, and now More Geneva football players have been mentioned by TAPPS with 2nd-Team all-district awards: Reid Aderholt, Bruce Hanover, Caleb Baggs, and Jackson Mitchell.

The Spurs won an overtime thriller against the Hawks, 133-126. Wemby had 42 points in the contest. The Spurs’ next game will be Saturday at home against Portland.

There were two unfortunate car accidents yesterday in Boerne, with one ending in a fatality. The first occurred when a driver crashed into a utility pole between River Road and Cottonwood Avenue, causing the traffic lights to go out and up to 50 Boerne utility customers to lose power. River Road between Main and Esser was blocked off for a few hours but reopened just after noon.

The second crash occurred just after 4:15 at Excelled Montessori Plus School, resulting in the death of a teacher in her 20’s and at least 5 children hospitalized. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar spoke in a media conference and described how the crash occurred while parents were picking up their kids from school yesterday. One of the moms accelerated, crashing into another vehicle, blowing through a fence that faced the playground, pinning the teacher and the children underneath. According to officials, another teacher was injured in the accident as well, and the driver could have a medical issue that explains the crash. Sheriff Salazar said it was unclear if charges would be filed at this time.

The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting this week and here are some of the highlights. Michael Joannou is hopping from his role as Vice Principal at Van Raub Elementary to the brand new Principal at Curington. Brittney Walker was also promoted from Assistant Principal of Champion to the Academic Dean. Updates on the bond projects were given to the Board, as well as the official adoption of Option 2 for the 2025-2026 School year, which won 78% of the vote. Finally, the Annual Cookies, Cocoa and Toy Drive was a huge success with over 700 toys collected from that one event.

 

If you miss the taste and flavors only found at the Little Gretel Restaurant - Chef Denise is now an author of a new cookbook featuring all her famous recipes called The Aroma of Czech Cuisine.  You can get your copy now at the Boerne Bookshop, but if swing by this Saturday from 1 to 3, you can get her to sign your copy.  The book not only contains recipes but also some great history and stories.  

 

And if you missed the Wednesday edition of the Boerne Star, here are some of the top stories. As the mental health crisis continues to take hold of our community, especially our youth, public officials are stepping up to find solutions. In 2023, 209 crisis calls were made to Boerne PD and the Kendall County Sherriff’s Office, which is a 39% increase from 2020. To address this growth, both departments have hired and trained two designated mental health officers, and the Police Department is working on hiring a 3rd. The Department also hired Bryce Boddie, a licensed social worker and director of behavioral health at Hill Country Family services, to assist the mental health officers with clinical assessments. 

 

In this week Boerne Star they reported that the founder of Girl with Grit, Blythe Zemel, purchased an old ‘34 Chevy truck years ago that became the landmark for her nonprofit and 5 years ago, her paths crossed with student Payton Newman in her art class. Now, as Newman gets closer to his graduation, Blythe decided to do something remarkable. It turns out that Zemel had purchased the truck from Newman’s grandfather, Mel Lee Ellenwood, and in an act to honor him, returned the truck to Newman.  The truck now lives at the Agricultural Museum and Arts Center which is a great photo op this Christmas.
