Friday 4/19

We’re almost to the finish line of the baseball and softball regular season. Three area teams are in action tonight all at 7pm- Boerne baseball will be at Davenport, Champion baseball is at Smithson Valley, and Champion softball will host Seguin. 

Geneva Tennis at State combined for the highest total of points accumulated by both the girls and boys combined. A long list of names on the team qualified for individual recognitions as well. 

We are officially on Leachman Watch 2000 again with Elizabeth running at regionals for UIL this weekend. I’m sure by Monday we’ll have a good list compiled of awards and records she would have tallied up. 

The Gunslingers are finally on the board this season! They claimed their first win of the year last night against Tucson in front of Gunslinger nation. Final from the Freeman was 60-36. San Antonio is 1-3 currently, and they’re right back to work next Friday in Frisco.

Boerne Radio Sports - April 19, 2024

It’s Friday April 19th. 

And it was on this date 29 years ago the Oklahoma City bombing happened at 9:02am and killed at least 168 people. Until 9/11 it was the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil.  It was timed to occur two years to the hour as the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.

If you were planning on heading to San Antonio this weekend, you might want to take another route other than I-10. TxDot will be closing the main lanes of 1604 and the cloverleaf ramps starting tonight at 9 until early Monday morning. Although the main lanes of I-10 will not be closed, traffic is expected to be heavy, and TxDot is encouraging drivers to avoid the area if possible. And expect more closures each weekend for the remainder of the month.



The 5th Annual German Spelling Bee took place recently for Boerne ISD, and let’s be Frankfurt, the kids nailed it. Cole Grotjohn, a student at Boerne High School, clutched the gold, while Ethan Lane and Ximena Diaz Lopez took 2nd and 3rd for Champion. The students were awarded with $200 in food and drinks from our friends over at the Bubble Tea Factory, as well as other local businesses. - Das Good!



In light of National Volunteer Recognition Week, the Boerne Middle School South National Junior Honor Society collected and donated stuffed animals. The toys will be going towards the Bears for Cops and Kids initiative, which is run by the Boerne Police Department. More than 50 animals will be going to the cause, and hopefully will be loved by a child soon.

It’s Thursday April 18th. 

And it was on this date in 1942 when Jimmy Doolittle’s Raiders flew to Japan with 16 B-25 bombers…America’s first response after the Pearl Harbor attack. The plan was to drop the bombs and bail out over China since they wouldn’t have enough fuel to fly back to the USS Hornet.  While little damage was done to Tokyo, it was a boost to the US morale.

Well River Road Park had its official rededication ceremony yesterday morning, and hundreds of people joined Mayor Richie, City Management and the Parks and Rec department to cut the ribbon. After months of construction, the newly renovated park is now more sustainable and more accessible for our community. The Director of the Parks and Rec Department, Lizzette Jimenez, gave a shoutout to some local students who had a hand in the project as well:

City Communications Director Chris Shadrock encourages you for the next few months to stay on the dedicated walking spaces so that the new grass and vegetation can take root.



The Kendall County Animal Shelter has given an update on the rabies outbreak happening in our community. In the past couple months there have been 4 confirmed rabies cases near Coveney Ranch and Rusty Ln., with the most recent involving a fox bite in the 100 block of Cordillera Trace. The fox was tested and confirmed positive last week, and the victim is now undergoing treatment. The Kendall County Sheriff's Office urges everyone to remain vigilant, and to call animal control if you see an animal acting erratic.   That number is 830-537-3430
