It’s Friday March 20th. 

 

And born on this date in 1937 was American Grammy-winning Hall of Fame country musician and actor Jerry Hubbard who you know better as Jerry Reed.  The big hits include East Bound and Down from Smokey And The Bandit, and She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft.  Also happy 75th birthday to blues guitar legend and Austinite Jimmie Vaughan - brother of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan.

 

And happy birthday to Mr. Matthew Penrod right here in Boerne.

 

The Boerne ISD Parent Teacher Organizations from Champion and Boerne High noticed there was no recognition for students who went above and beyond for service in the community, and so they created the Superintendent’s Volunteer Service Award. This year marks the first time this award has been given out, and recognizes volunteer hours completed in the 2025 calendar year. In total, 31 Boerne Highschool students served 4,629 hours. From now on, the award will be the new standard, and students will be able to proudly display a new medal celebrating this achievement in this year's graduation regalia.

 

If you need another reason to visit the Outdoor Family Fair tomorrow, the bookmobile will be parked in Main Plaza with giveaways and books to check out. The van has increased accessibility to education around the city, and eliminates the barrier of having to physically visit the library. You’ll be able to sign up for library cards, tour the vehicle and maybe win a prize. The van and the event will be in Main Plaza from 10 to 2. 

 

A national discount shopping chain is making its way to North Main Street this spring. Harbor Freight, the self-appointed "America's #1 tool store," announced this week that it will open a new Boerne location inside of a shopping center in the Northside. A filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows construction began in February and is slated to wrap on April 20th.

The Champion boys soccer team was in the playoffs and ready to go last night, but already knowing their assignment- they knew it would be tough. They had to face Liberty Hill, only the defending state champs, no biggie right? We are tied at 0-0 after regulation, so we head to a penalty kick shootout. Liberty Hill ended up winning 5-4 in the penalty kicks and narrowly secured the win. The Chargers are out, but a great run this season… all the hard work paid off for sure! Way to go guys! 

Youth softball players- if you wear your BYAA or travel team jersey to the Greyhound softball game tonight, you’ll get into the game for free. First pitch is at 7 as they take on Wagner. 

Men’s NCAA March Madness for college basketball- Texas schools loving it up indeed. TCU advanced with a very slim 66-64 win against Ohio St. Texas A&M took care of St. Mary’s 63-50, and Houston handily beat Idaho 78-47. Houston and A&M will face each other in round 2 Saturday. And an upset not a lot saw coming- UT Austin out of the First Four defeated BYU 79-71 and they are headed to round 2 as well. Round 1 concludes today with the game starting at 11:15. Texas Tech and Akron go to work at 11:40, and Prairie View A&M against top-seeded Florida tips off at 8:25. 

The Spurs officially claimed a spot in the playoffs with a win over the Suns, 101-100 last night.

If traffic and transportation is a hot topic and concern for you here in Boerne, The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is hosting 5 public meetings looking for advice and feedback on how to spend 1.9 billion dollars in transportation projects.  One is at New Braunfels City Hall tonight, 2 in San Antonio, then Seguin, and on Monday they will be in Boerne at the Patrick Heath Public Library starting at 5:30.  There you can learn about and comment on the draft 2027 to 2030 Transportation Improvement Program, which outlines projects set for funding and construction. Officials say it’s a chance to see what’s coming to our community, ask questions, and provide feedback before the plan is finalized.  In fact there’s a traffic survey they’d like you to take to identify your concerns and ideas and we have that link in the news blog at Boerne Radio.com.

And last night was the first of the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy, which is a 12-week program from the Police Departments of Fair Oaks Ranch and Boerne, as well as the Kendall County Sheriff's Office. The class boasted the largest turnout in 8 years.  They will be holding the class every Wednesday until the first week of June.
