Boost Boerne Business -DeeDee Lake - November 2024

 

It’s Tuesday July 21st. 

And it was on this date that a Texas outlaw was born and died.  Sam Bass born in 1851, and after several failed occupations, he resorted to stagecoach robbing and in the 1870s, he became the most wanted man in Texas.  In Round Rock, he was in a shootout with the Texas Rangers; he was wounded and captured but died on his 27th birthday.  You can find his gravestone in Round Rock today and hear his name in many cowboy songs and stories.

The City of Fair Oaks Ranch is preparing for the reconstruction of part of Dietz Elkhorn between Fair Oaks Parkway and FM 3351. The project will rebuild the existing roadway while maintaining 11-foot travel lanes and adding five-foot paved shoulders on both sides. City Staff will hold a public meeting to discuss the plans tomorrow night from 4 to 6 in the Police Department Training Room. 

 

Cleanup is almost complete on Battle Intense in Fair Oaks as well. After the Cibolo Creek flooded the roadway, bringing debris and high waters, crews worked diligently to work towards safely reopening the road. Although conditions can change, they will reopen as soon as possible. 

 

Boerne has many resources for those in need after the historic flooding last week-Hill Country Family Services is providing financial assistance, food, free counseling services and collaborative referrals. Nissan of Boerne is providing free towing complimentary inspections and rental vehicle options. Boerne First United Methodist Church is filling buckets with cleaning supplies, and the Rebuild Texas Fund has been launched to help victims. 

 

Congratulations to our friends at Klein Smokehaus, whose legitimate bacon was named Grand Champion of the 2026 American Cured Meat Championships. Klein Smokehaus also earned top honors for its ham and heavyweight bacon, along with numerous awards at the recent Texas state contest.

Well, we are 8 days away now from the premiere of the Boerne Radio Coach’s Show live from 28 Songs Brewhouse here on the station. And along with Stan Leech being guest number one, we can confirm the next two guests- Boerne Little League Coaches will join the show to talk about the upcoming regional tournament, and then the Texas Wild Hogs ownership talking about their mission with the newest arena football team coming to the Hill Country. The Coach’s Show will premiere next Wednesday July 29, live from 28 Songs Brewhouse at 6pm here on Boerne Radio. 

And the result of The Open Championship was a close one, but Ryan Fox of Australia took home the gold by one stroke with a -10. This weekend is coming up, and we look forward to the 3M Open… Kurt Kitayama from the U.S. is the defending champion, and the purse is an estimated $8.8 million.

Also checking the Boerne Radio Birthday Club we say Happy Birthday to Laurie Brooks with the Brooks Real Estate Group, Jan Hoffhiens owner of J. Groomed, Chrystal Jordon, Ariel Angelucci, and Donna Nielson.  You all share your birthday with fellow Texan and Spurs Fan Selina Gomez who will play Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming bio-pic.  She turns 34.  And another Texan and founding Eagle Don Henley is 79.

Boerne Utilities customers will be able to drop off flood debris to Northrup Park starting on Wednesday. Flood-damaged materials from homes and businesses, including fencing, flooring, sheetrock and brush, will be collected by WM at no cost. Hazardous materials will not be collected, and the City is also asking residents to utilize bulky item pickup to collect large appliances and furniture. To use the drop off site, you must present a valid I.D. and a recent utilities bill-the site will be open 8 to 5, Monday through Friday until the 31st. 

 

Boerne Animal Care Services evacuated 17 dogs and 30 cats from its Esser Road shelter to the Kendall County Animal Shelter. All adoptable animals have since been transferred to Austin Pets Alive. Because no animals are currently available to the public, the shelter’s volunteer program is paused until further notice. 

 

Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries has partnered with Mercy Chefs to serve as a contact point for meal requests for the Texas Hill Country flood response. They are providing chef prepared meals to flood victims, first responders and volunteer teams. If your church, nonprofit or group needs meals while serving in affected areas, you can contact Daily Bread at 830-755-5200; just provide a head count and a location where the meals are needed. 

 

Kendall County could become only the nation’s second “Dark Sky County.” Commissioner Richard Chapman says reducing nighttime light pollution would preserve the area’s scenic character and boost tourism. 

 

A Champion High School graduate is marching toward a childhood dream. Matthew Juarez earned a coveted spot in the mellophone section of Phantom Regiment—one of the world’s premier drum corps. Just hours after graduation, he flew to Kentucky to begin rehearsals and a nationwide summer tour.  Saturday night, he performed before a sold-out Alamodome crowd at the DCI Southwestern Championship, where Phantom Regiment placed sixth.  Next stop: the Drum Corps International World Championship Finals August 8th in Indianapolis.  For Matthew Jaurez…the beat goes on!
