Boerne Community Theatre Preview: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” + Hill Country’s Got Talent 10th Anniversary

On Boerne Radio’s “Boost Boerne Business,” host Baron Wiley interviews Christine Crowley of the Boerne Community Theatre about upcoming productions and fundraising. The theatre celebrates 35 years, along with the 10th anniversary of its major fundraiser, Hill Country’s Got Talent. Boost Boerne Business - Boerne Community Theatre - August 2026 

 

It’s Friday August 14th.

 

An important day in American History - it’s VJ Day - when Japan surrenders ending World War II.  Japan would sign the formal surrender terms two weeks later aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay in 1945.  Today the Missouri rests near the sunken Arizona in Pearl Harbor where the war started for the US.

And some birthdays to celebrate including some great friends of Boerne Radio…Happy Birthday to Lee Cavender with Cavender Chevrolet, Sam Upshaw of the Pure Country Radio Show, Emily Henckel, and Susan Chancellor.

Traffic will be even more interesting on Main Street as St. Peter the Apostle Catholic school begins today with a morning Mass, ribbon cutting, and tours of the new campus on West Hosack Street. The school opens with students from Pre-K through sixth, with plans to expand to 8th grade.

 

Hill Country Family Services is one of just 4 nonprofits that was selected by the Community Foundation to distribute emergency financial assistance to families affected by the July flooding. In just two weeks, HCFS has helped 39 families, and will continue working to give out the $94,000 they were granted. 

 

After 20 years of service, Advancement Director Libby Lunsford has retired from the Geneva School of Boerne. Justin Ellis, who has been serving as the school’s graphic designer and photographer since 2024, was chosen as her replacement. 

 

Congratulations to Deputy E. Alejandro and Deputy C. Alderete for being sworn into the Kendall County Sheriff's Office. If you see them around town, give them a warm Boerne welcome. 

Starting tonight, expect closures at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange as TxDOT continues expansion work. Closures run nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Monday morning but what in the world are you doing out so late anyway.

The Express-News ranks the Chargers number 10 in its preseason San Antonio-area Top 20.  Champion returns quarterback Julian Navarrete after a 31-touchdown season, along with seven starters on both offense and defense.

Sights and sounds of cheering, a sea of orange, and the blares of police sirens filled Main Street yesterday at the bottom of the 4pm hour as Boerne Little League was sent off with support before their trip to Pennsylvania. Trucks with players and their families waving to crowds on the street who were wishing those players good luck, along with a police escort by Boerne Police, Kendall County, and even SAPD helped in the lead. They then headed to Northrup Park for one last practice. The team departs Boerne today for the World Series. Games will not begin for another week from today on the 21st. 

We’re at the time of year when football scrimmages start… and the goal for these preseason friendlies are all about getting to feel the field after 8 months off. Boerne played La Vernia last night, Geneva plays Brentwood tonight, and Champion will host New Braunfels. 

Preseason for the NFL also started with week 1 last night… the Texans were in action, but lost to the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-7. The Cowboys will not play until Saturday.

It’s Thursday August 13th. 

 

And it was on this date in 1952 that Big Mama Thornton recorded “Hound Dog” for the first time — four years before Elvis Presley turned it into one of the biggest hits of the rock-and-roll era.  

Here in Boerne we say happy birthday to Mr. Dickens at Christmas and Cowboy for Hire Jay Pennington, also to Leo Baray, and your co-owner of Signarama Kelly Mattingly.

The City of Boerne’s 2027 Budget was presented to the council during a workshop on Tuesday night, reducing spending from 2026 by 7.7%. The 163.9 million dollar budget will continue to build on the City’s long term strategic priorities by supporting public safety, including a new 22-point-5 million dollar Boerne Fire Station Number Two, opening the new Boerne Heritage Volkspark, invest in technology, provide high quality municipal services and maintain the City’s status as an employer of choice. The budget will also fund the addition of three new parks service workers plus 3 seasonal attendants, add a patrol officer, and decrease the home tax rate by more than $100. The City of Boerne will hold two public hearings on the proposed budget and tax rate, one on August 25th and the other on September 8th. 

 

Other projects on the horizon in Boerne include a 20-million dollar VA outpatient clinic, major church construction, Boerne ISD is also planning nearly 3 million dollars in renovations at Middle School South.

 

Boerne ISD received it’s 7th straight “A” rating by the Texas Education Agency this week. Students and staff received this honor in the 2026 Accountability ratings!  And that’s the way to start off the school year. 

 

The Southwest Region Champions also known as Boerne Little League will be playing their first game Friday August 21st as all the main street brewery’s jockey for watch parties.  The place to be today at 4:30 is up and down Main Street between River Road and Johns Road for the Main Street Send Off as the team heads to their final practice before leaving for Williamsport.  

 

And you might as well stick around downtown because it’s Ladies Night at DeVino Cellars.

 

This just in…we have some breaking news - The Cibolo Creek Quilters Guild is celebrating their 10th Anniversary tomorrow at 11:30 in the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce.

There has been no announcement on when the gossiping starts.  That’s a joke…everyone knows quilting is cheaper than therapy.
