Boost Boerne Business - Apex Med Primary Care at Shavano

It’s Friday February 20th. 

 

And it was on this date in 1942 that Edward Butch O’Hare single-handedly attacked nine Japanese bombers, shooting down five, saving the USS Lexington from certain destruction. These heroic actions made him the Navy's first flying ace, and the Navy's first World War II recipient of the Medal of Honor.  Chicago’s O’Hare airport was named after him in 1949.

 

Early Voting continues in Kendall County through the 27th at the Courthouse Annex.  Many of the candidates are hanging out there so don’t be shy and say hi. The Kendall County Burn ban has been officially reinstated by the Kendall County Commissioners Court. It will be in effect for 90 days unless renewed or lifted earlier by the Court. Under local code, only certain burning may be permitted, including firefighter training, agricultural burns, and if you’re grilling out. The Rotary Club of Fair Oaks Ranch gave a generous donation to the Hill Country Family Services. Their $2500 contribution will help with counseling services, renovating their thrift shop at Random Hangers, and support their food pantry. 

 

Just a reminder-The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce is offering five scholarships to high school seniors graduating in 2026, with each amounting to $2,000. Any one who lives and attends school in Kendall County can apply if they are graduating this Spring, and applications are open until March 20th. Some of the scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate the spirit of community service, and pursuing business or a trade. We’ve got some soccer games tonight around the district- Boerne will be taking on Vets Memorial at 7:15 tonight- the girls will be home and the boys away. Chargers teams are off tonight, with a match awaiting Tuesday. 

The Central Catholic Tennis On Campus Invitational was this week and your Geneva Eagles were INVITED!  As a whole the team went 3 and 1, landing them in 4th place overall.   Yesterday they took on a tough St. Mary’s Hall but they kept it close winning 5 of the 12 matches.  Allison Gergch won her #2 seed match in Girls Singles 8-2. Grant Dillinger and Alex Malouf won the #1 doubles match 8-4.

Spurs win first of two in Austin against Phoenix, 121-94. Next game is in Austin Saturday against Sacramento.

It’s Thursday February 19th. 

 

Happy Boerne Radio Birthday to the legendary William Smokey Robinson Jr. who turns 86 today…and the singer Seal is 63.   American Astronaut Joseph Kerwin turns 94 - he went on a Skylab mission, and the first doctor in the US to enter space, and earned his flight surgeon’s wings in Beeville, and today lives in College Station.

And happy birthday to Boerne’s own Ryan Johnson, Chanelle Thompson a big supporter of Love Kendall County Kids…and Musician Mitch Stephen who wrote the song Sitting in Sisterdale!

 

Nearly 65 residents packed Bakery Lorraine yesterday for a City of Boerne meeting on traffic concerns along Oak Park Drive. Engineering and Mobility Director Jeff Carroll called it one of the largest community turnouts in recent memory. Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez and City officials discussed safety improvements, including possible mini roundabouts and lighted stop signs. Crews have already installed new red flashing stop signs at Frey and Oak Park. The City will continue reviewing feedback and plans a follow-up with residents in the coming months.

 

So after the All-Clear signal from Boerne ISD of a bomb threat yesterday, the fog lifted with dozens of schools across Texas with the same drama including Comfort High School.  They weren’t cleared until 2:12 in the afternoon.  Steele High School cancelled their classes.  Other districts include Uvalde, Schertz Cibolo, and Universal City.  And that’s just around here…the mass hoax went all up I-35 into Austin up to Dallas.  Making a false bomb threat is a serious federal and state crime.  Fines can be up to $10,000 and up to 5 or 10 years in prison for Federal offenses, as the investigation continues.

 

Last Friday Rusty Bubsy of the Hill Country Archaeological Association discovered a Flint Multitool at Sisterdale Sanctuary managed by the Cibolo Center for Conservation. Estimated to be thousands of years old, the tool features a scraping edge that could have been used on everything from root vegetables to animal hides.   A partial skull, possibly a feline, was also found in the floodplain near the base of the Escarpment at Sisterdale.
