 The City of Boerne gained approval from the Texas Water Commission in 1972 to construct and maintain a dam and reservoir on Cibolo Creek for municipal purposes and to aid in flood control. With the dam's construction, Boerne City Lake was born. The John D. Reed Dam and Boerne City Lake was completed and dedicated on June 22, 1978. The City gained further approval in 1979 to utilize water from the reservoir for domestic purposes. In 2005, Boerne City Council approved the development of City Lake Park.
