We are officially 2 weeks away from the start of the Boerne Radio Coach’s Show airing right here on 103.9FM LIVE every Wednesday from 28 Songs Brewhouse… I’ll be having a talk with coaches from the district and beyond about current sports events in the district and why fans should be stoked about their schools playing. And a day before that on July 28 is when Dallas Cowboy players begin reporting for training camp. And in what some could call a shock, no player is reportedly holding out at this point. So that’s good news for the team. The Texans camp will take place on July 29- but the team at the moment is mourning and celebrating the life of Janice S. McNair, wife of late owner Bob. Janice passed away yesterday at the age of 89 but was one of the pioneers in bringing the team back to Houston. 

A check in with the World Cup- in a shocking game to a lot of fans, Spain defeated a powerhouse in France 2-0 to punch their ticket to the championship game. They await the winner of England and Argentina, which will be played today at 2. 

In the MLB All-Star Game, the American League took a 4-0 win over the National League. And a fun fact according to Google is in the 96 editions played of the mid-season classic, the team that wins usually has their representative team win the World Series 51% of the time. According to those odds, the Rangers and Astros at the moment should feel good being among the top teams. Texas will begin the 2nd half of the year Friday in Atlanta and Houston will head home for a series with Baltimore.

It’s Wednesday July 15th. 

 

Born on this date in 1946 was 11 time grammy winner and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Linda Ronstadt who turns 80 today.

 

Another day of rain in a saturated Hill Country.  We are under a Flood Watch until at least 7:00 tonight.  Boerne is currently under a category 3 out of 4 for flood risk, with areas to the west in a 4 out of 4. 

Our friend Chris at the Boerne Life gave an eye witness report on a 101% full Boerne Lake.  

 

Boerne Radio listeners were reporting more full rain gauges yesterday - Pamela Muenzler who is between Boerne and Comfort reported 4.75”, Laura Mancill off of Ranger Creek said all 3 of her gauges overflowed at 6”,  and Linda Barker who is 13 miles north of Bandera reported 7” so far. 

 

Yesterday the Cibolo Creek turned into a river when it crossed the road at Battle Intense in Fair Oaks Ranch. After closing down the road, Fair Oaks Ranch crews worked diligently to reopen it by removing debris and clearing the water that had accumulated. A mere 90 minutes later, the Battle Intense crossing was flooded again and had to be closed again.

At this week’s Board Meeting, Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District has eased restrictions from Drought Stage 3 to Stage 2, citing improved groundwater levels, recent rain, and stronger streamflow. Domestic well owners may water by sprinkler on their assigned weekday before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m. Hand watering is allowed anytime. More details at CCGCD.org.

Each year, the Comfort Baptist Church hosts a Backpack Outreach Program to prepare bags and supplies for students in need. They currently have over 120 orders from students, and are asking the community for donations. Composition books, Kleenex, pens, glue sticks, you name it! You can drop off donations at the Church in Comfort.

And born this date in 1913 - the 38th President of the United States and 40th Vice President.   Gerald Rudolph Ford is the only person to have served as both vice president and president without being elected to either office by the Electoral College.  Ford played football at the University of Michigan and helped the team play two undefeated seasons and win national titles in 1932 and 1933.

 

Boerne Radio listener Guy Atherton reported 3.76 inches in his rain gauge overnight. Pattie Fergusson is out west of Nelson City and she said 2.74”.  Fair Oaks Ranch has seen almost 2 inches overnight.  The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch through Thursday evening across the Hill Country, and noted there may be life threatening flooding with rainfall totals hitting 2 to 6 more inches, with isolated totals up to 10. Beware the low water crossings in town, and maintain a turnaround, don’t drown mentality. 

 

Boerne Community Theatre is holding auditions for their annual fundraiser, The Hill Country's Got Talent on July 25 and 26. They said love to see a wide variety of talent--singers, instrumentalists, comedians, ventriloquists, magicians, acrobats, puppet shows, etc.   The event will be Saturday, Sept. 19th at the Jones Christmas Ranch.  There are cash prizes for youth and adult categories. And congratulations again to Boerne High School alum Cam Johnson who just signed to the MLB as a Kansas City Royal. He was a national champion during his time at the University of Oklahoma, but will now be moving to Missouri as a 9th round pick.  While Rashawn Galloway - a 2022 grad was selected in Round 16 by the Houston Astros.  Boerne Radio Sports with Esteban Serrano is coming up at the bottom of the hour.

Let’s start with golf today… as the Scottish Open ended with Tom Kim of South Korea taking the crown and a score of -17 this past weekend. Also this past weekend, the ISCO Championship where Steven Fisk had a score of -16 to win that tournament… and this upcoming weekend, we have The Open to look forward to. Scottie Scheffler won it last year- can he go back-to-back? We shall see.

And tonight is the annual National League vs American League MLB All-Star Game. Now, you would think the National League would win because of their records being dominant in the first half of the season. But watch out for the American League tonight and in the second half of the season. You’ll very likely be seeing a battle with Texas, Houston, and Seattle for a chance to go to the playoffs. The All-Star game is tonight at 7 from Philadelphia.
