Comfort had a 2nd round playoff volleyball match with Holliday on the road. Unfortunately, they were stopped short, losing in four sets. A great season and effort by Comfort. Geneva will have their second round match against Holy Cross tonight at 6. 

The final week of the high school football regular season is Friday. Boerne will be in Kerrville to battle Tivy in a classic rivalry, while Champion will head to North San Antonio to battle Pieper. Both teams are already in the playoffs… we will announce tomorrow here on Boerne Radio which game will be our live game on Friday night. 

Well, the Spurs won’t face the Lakers until tomorrow night in LA- but tonight, another kind of matchup. The residents and our friends of Bexar County, and the Spurs’ Propositions as a part of Election Day. Props A and B as they are informally known, have been a buzz around the Spurs for the past month. Owner Peter Holt had been seen at games trying to get fans to vote, even appearing in television commercials. The goal is to get the Spurs a new arena in Hemisfair like the good George Gervin days, and the Spurs would pay for the majority, while the City and County would contribute money in addition to a federal grant. The Rodeo would also benefit with year-round stock grounds where the Frost Bank Center is now. They are essentially asking the public to approve a tax already in place that increases tax on travelers’ hotel rooms and rental cars. In an article by UT San Antonio on October 15, in a poll, it reported 45% were in favor of a downtown arena while 40% were against it. A big vote tonight for Bexar County, San Antonio, and for the Spurs.

It’s Tuesday March 31st. 

 

And born on this date in 1955 is ACDC co-founder guitarist Angus Young making him 71 years young.   I thought he was older.  And on lead mom of the Partridge Family Shriley Jones is 92 - and to another Jones in Boerne, happy birthday Dyna Jones.

And while we celebrate local birthdays, another national day started right here in Boerne…this Saturday is National Handmade Day created, and celebrated everyday by Handmade on Main owner Amy Bierstedt.   She suggested the idea to the From Scratch Farm website back in 2017, it became official in 2018 and national companies like Jo-Ann Fabrics have embraced it every first Saturday in April since.   So we at Boerne Radio say make this Saturday the best day ever for Handmade on Main…and way to go Amy! 

 

Some upsetting news coming out of Comal County-yesterday morning there was an active shooter situation at the Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde. By 10:08 the threat had been neutralized, and most students were reunited with their parents after being transported to Bulverde Middle School. The shooter was a 15 year old male who fired at a female teacher-she remains hospitalized in San Antonio with no current update on her condition, and the student died at the scene. The school is closed today, and the investigation is ongoing. 

 

The City of Boerne is seeking your input on a draft of its Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The plan provides a data-driven outline to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries while improving safety for all users. Currently 73% of the crashes that occur in Boerne occur on 15% of the roadways, including South Main, West Bandera and around Main Plaza.   The link to that plan is in the news blog at BoerneRadio.com.

Hill Country Family Services has a new wishlist for the month of April,  highlighting the current greatest needs for the corner cupboard. This month they are asking for donations of canned salmon, dog food, kleenex boxes, rice, ranch style beans and small cans of coffee. This is just in from yesterday… The Boerne Star has reported that Geneva Football has found its new head coach. Just over a week ago, Bob Rosenstiel took a job with Austin St. Michael’s as their head coach after just one season with Geneva. And his replacement is coming from Austin St. Michael’s; Get to know the name Adam Foren… he will be the next Eagles head coach. Rosenstiel was hired 342 days ago, and in this season, he took the team to the state semifinals. 

Hey and Boerne Radio Sports wouldn’t be sports without the electronic sports as well. In fact, Boerne Middle School South has some talented E-Sports players. A recent district tournament showcased said talent. The entire BMSS team did great, with Raymond Tena placing 2nd and Hendrix Leyendecker with a 3rd place finish.

It’s a great day to be a fan of the Texas Longhorns. The women’s basketball team are regional champions and are advancing to their 2nd-consecutive Final Four. They defeated Michigan last night to claim a spot in the national semifinal. That game will be against UCLA on Friday at 8:30 from Phoenix. 

And we get set for the Valero Texas Open from the challenging TPC San Antonio course down the road. It tees off Thursday and the purse is expected to be a whopping $9.8 million.

A new baseball book coming out of Boerne will debut on April 1st, no joke, and it’s called How Boerne Made History and Played on their Field of Dreams by Coach Tim Christ telling the story of their historic run to the Little League World series.  Be listening this Saturday for our Boerne Radio interview with Coach Christ.

 

Congratulations to Wendy Zamzow for being announced District Teacher of the Year for Boerne ISD! Mrs. Zamzow is an AP Physics teacher at Champion Highschool, and has her Bachelor’s in Genetics and a Master’s in Physics from Texas A&M. She has already received praise as Champion’s Teacher of the Year in 2018 but was selected by the Boerne Education Foundation as the ultimate winner this year. With her title, Toyota of Boerne also gifted her $10,000. 

 

And your Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce has four ribbon cuttings this week celebrating local businesses. Mixx Consulting led by Jacques DuBose will kick off the week with their ribbon cutting at 11:30 tomorrow at the Chamber, followed by Fortify Texas at 1:30. Bella Sera will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1:30, and Swing Strong ‘Til It’s Gone will be cutting the ribbon on Thursday at 11:30 at the Oak of Boerne as they are promoting their golf tournament supporting Parkinson’s Research. 

 

My Boerne News did an exclusive piece on the heroes who fought on the frontlines of the panhandle wildfires. In mid-February, wildfire spread across West Texas- the Boerne Fire Department deployed a brush truck and a three-person crew: Firefighter Johnathan Vadnais, Driver/Operator Ryan Lynch, and Lt. Toby Vicknair. Assigned to Strike Team ST-130, the Boerne firefighters operated in challenging, hilly terrain and worked 26 hours straight at the beginning of the fire, which behaved in unpredictable ways. After the initial response, the crew got about four hours of sleep at an old volunteer fire department building before returning for a 12-hour shift later that day, during which they hiked 10 miles.
