Boerne Radio Sports!

Alright, so with the winter weather we are experiencing, things are obviously having to be rescheduled. Let’s summarize WHEN every game is happening for the rest of this week:

Champion Softball was supposed to play Ingram Moore tonight, but that has moved to tomorrow at 5. 

Greyhounds vs Chargers Girls Soccer will play today, as scheduled- Varsity starts at 5:30, and then JV at 7:15 pm. Same time for the boys, but at the opposite venue. 

Greyhound and Chargers also play each other in basketball- the girls will play tonight at 6:30 as scheduled, but the boys will play each other tomorrow at 6:30- and a special announcement- we will carry the game on Boerne Radio! That’s right- keep it here Wednesday night for a special presentation of high school basketball, produced by Texas Sports Productions. Coverage begins at 6:15.

It’s Tuesday January 27th. 

 

It was on this date in 1945 that Auschwitz was liberated. Soviet Soldiers arrived at the Nazi death camp in Poland and began freeing the 5,200 survivors, including Anne Frank’s father Otto. By the time the Soviets arrived, over 1.5 million people had been killed at the camp.

School Day traffic almost back to normal with Boerne ISD starting 2 hours later on another below freezing morning, and Comfort ISD is playing the snow day card for one more day, back at it tomorrow.  They will make up that school day on February 6th. 

 

Tonight, at Boerne High School Auditorium a very important conversation is happening - Understand, Recognize, and Prevent Child Sexual Exploitation.  Special speakers are Susan Burkholder who is the Ransomed Life Prevention Education trainer, the Honorable Kendall County District Judge Katherine McDaniel and Rick Goodrich, your Chief of Safety and Security at Boerne ISD. This workshop will allow you to educate yourself on how to protect your children, understand the reality of these situations and learn tips and tools to having conversations and spotting red flags.  It starts at 5:30 and is made possible by a joint effort of all our local Rotary Clubs.

 

WM will continue trash services this morning, with your pick up one day after your normal day of the week. The Boerne Chamber of Commerce is hosting two ribbon cuttings today as well, one for Real Property management Hill Country and Micheal Riebel with Northwestern Mutual. 

 

And programming alert Boerne Radio will be carrying the Boerne Greyhound Champion Charger Boys Basketball game tomorrow night with coverage starting at 6:15.

It’s Monday January 26th. 

 

And it was on this date in 1932, when America was deep in Prohibition, that after Prime Minister Winston Churchill crossed a New York City street and was hit by a car, Dr. Pickhardt prescribed him alcohol for the pain with a minimum requirement of about 8 ounces especially at meal times, and that the quantity is naturally indefinite.  Churchill was also known for his cigars as well…and lived to be 90.  Never give up…never give in.

 

On Saturday was the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner at the Cana Ballroom with an earlier start time to beat the freeze.  Your new business of the year was our friends at The Boerne Life, Your non-profit of the year is the Boerne Blaze, Jeremy Affeldt at Free Roam is the Business Man of the Year, Patty Mainz is the Business Woman of the Year with the opening of Mainz Meat Market and the Black Rifle, Singing Water Vineyards is your business of the year with under 50 employees, and Powered by Synergy with over 50 employees.  

 

And as today is sunny and bright, many businesses have decided to close their doors today as ice is still on the roads with overnight freezing.  Waste Management has determined that they will not be collecting trash and recycling today, but will resume with normal operations tomorrow. Boerne ISD, as well as Comfort and Bandera ISD’s have decided to use a snow day. Kendall County Offices will also be closed, including Boerne City offices.   The Library is officially closed today but the warming station inside is still open through 7pm with hot coffee, cocoa, and soup…plus coats, hats, and gloves.  Good ol’ H-E-B adjusted their hours today - 10am to 11pm. 

 

The Boerne ISD report shows zero violent crimes committed on campuses as announced at the last Board meeting. On top of this, the district displayed no criminal activity of any kind and received an A in their 2024-2025 school year Texas Academic Performance Report. 

 

Kendall County’s bid to become a dark sky community received a boost last week- the Hill Country Alliance just rewarded the effort with funding from its Night Time Preservation fund. The HCA named 14 recipients for its second year of funding-Kendall County will use the money to establish sky quality monitoring and enhance outdoor lighting, as well as educate the community on the benefits of night sky preservation.

Enjoy your day off, students. Classes and school activities are cancelled today, meaning tomorrow’s sports games should be fun. 

Champion and Boerne High will face each other for the second time this season- and here’s something to know- according to the Boerne Star, Champion girls’ coach Jason Sanders is chasing career win #300 tomorrow night. It’s a big game for sure. Also given we are a few weeks away from the playoffs beginning. 

A new edition of ‘The Boerne Brew’ with Kerry Barboza is out now. He is the Sports Editor of the Boerne Star Newspaper. He talks to Brett Sawyer, Greyhound Football Head Coach about the amazing 2025 season. Don’t miss it! Just head to BoerneRadio.com and click under ‘podcasts’.
