It’s Tuesday and that means more district basketball contests to look forward to tonight! All games will be at 6:30. Greyhounds play Wagner with the boys taking the bus to Converse and the girls staying back home. The Chargers will face another Judson ISD school- Veterans Memorial. Boys are away and the girls are hosting.

The Texans are moving onto the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs after defeating the Steelers 30-6 last night. In 2024, Houston made it to the Divisional Round and lost to Baltimore. This time around, their opponent will be the New England- a pretty hot and contentious team all season long. This game will take place Sunday at 2.

It’s Tuesday January 13th.

 

And it was on this date in 1968 that Johnny Cash entered the prison system. And it’s not because he shot a man in Reno - which he didn’t…He brought his band to play for the inmates at California’s Folsom Prison.  When that recording was released, it launched him back into the charts and re-defined his career.

 

You know the expression there is money on the table…. Each year the City of Boerne collects revenue from a tax collected on guest rooms at our local hotels and inns called the Hotel Occupancy Tax or HOT for short and uses the money to reinvest in programs that attract overnight guests.   So if you have a dream to host your own car show, or promotion of the arts, anything that attracts tourists to Boerne as Larry Woods says put heads in beds back in those hotels, now is the time to apply.  The deadline to apply is March 19th and the big Shark Tank style pitch happens in City Hall on April 9th.  All the details on the City of Boerne website but we have a direct link in our news blog at boerneradio.com.

The Boerne Chamber is hosting two ribbon cuttings on Thursday to support local businesses. The first will be at 11:30 for Vacay Vibes Travel by Shonda, that will happen in the Chamber, and the second will be at 1:30 for Edquisitive Montessori of Fair Oaks which is a teaching preschool and day care -  they are located on I-10 just past the Lamborghini showroom.

 

Work has begun on the Old No. 9 trail to replace utility poles from Blanco to Esser Road. Crews will be working from 8am to 3 until next Friday, and large utility trucks will be operating along the trail. At times they may need to cross the No. 9 to complete their work safely, so pedestrians are asked to use caution and remain alert while crews are at work. 

 

Happy Birthday to Missy Ivankovich - she’s the owner of Singing Water Vineyards, Trip Matthews he’s the head brewer at Tusculum Brewing Company on Main Street, also to Gerson Roque, Destiny Rodriguez and Jered Cid…if you see them out and about wish them a happy birthday!

And a couple of Radio icons share a birthday on this date…Rush Hudson Limbaugh born in 1951, and Howard Stern turns 72 today.  And some icons in Boerne celebrating today include Marianne Young, Sue Balcar, and Kay Caldwell!  Happy Birthday!

Champion Highschool underwent a scenario-based demonstration on Friday that showed attendees how drones can be utilized during critical events like mass shootings. Campus Guardian Angel, the company that develops the drones and pilots them in emergencies, would equip Champion with an estimated 60 drones if approved by Boerne ISD. These aren’t the average toys you can buy at Walmart-these machines are equipped with pepper-ball pellets, can break through glass and can fly at 40 miles per hour. The program also comes with an app for teachers to go live on video or text with a member of the offsite Campus Guardian Angel team. The demonstration was successful, but there is no official timeline for implementing the system in Champion or any other Boerne ISD school.

 

The Kendall County Republican Party has appointed a new chair after the leadership role was vacated by Jennifer Barreras-Rawls. Taking over the helm is Traften Werenskjold, a native Texan, veteran Army Aviator, and small business owner -one devoted to aviation called Down To Fly and Bandit Bin Cleaners. 

 

It’s Christmas Tree and Bulky disposal week, here are some reminders so your trees don’t get left behind. Trees must be out on the curb by 7 am on your normal collection day, and trees over 8 feet tall must be cut in two. Tree trunks must be less than 6 inches in diameter, must have all of the decorations removed and cannot be flocked. In the event there is an overwhelming number of trees needing collected, crews will continue to collect until everyone is served.

Headlines: 3 BISD football player rep in SA All-Star Game / Texans vs Steelers in wild card round tonight / Spurs lose to Minnesota

Boerne high schools had great representation in the San Antonio Sports All Star Football game this past Saturday at the Alamodome. Blake Burkholder and Eli Nikolas from Boerne High, as well as Brogan Dempsey from Champion, were all players on Team Blue. Team White was the opposition, but Blue prevailed by a score of 26-18. 

The Houston Texans play wild card round football tonight against the Steelers. The Texans statistically have the better record of 12-5, but the Steelers were division winners and got to host. It should be interesting. Kickoff is at 7:15 on ABC and ESPN.

The Spurs had a tough time winning a back-to-back in Minnesota yesterday. They lost 104-103 to the Timberwolves. They’re off tonight, but make a pilgrimage to Oklahoma City for a contest tomorrow night.
