Game day is finally here- let’s get you set for tonight as Champion looks to advance another round. But first, a reminder we will carry the 3-game series here on Boerne Radio. Starting tonight at 6:45 with the pregame show powered by TSP. 

Palmview is their opponent and Champion will have their work cut out for them. The Lobos also won their district- their team batting average is .326, they have 199 runs batted in, and 279 hits all season. Those numbers are very impressive and could possibly make for a great series. We shall see. 

And if there’s any indication of talent on Champion, this may be one- the San Antonio Area Baseball Coaches Association has selected 3 Charger players to play in the Senior Salute All Star Game. Garland Whitehead,  Austin Garritano, and Brody Bendele are the 3. This game will take place at a later date.

It’s Thursday, May 14th. 

And born on this date in 1944 is the director and creator of the Star Wars films,  George Lucas.  George is 82.  David Byrne from Talking Heads is 73.

Here in the Hill Country, Happy Birthday to Kerry Haynes, and Mr. Shane Lindner with Lindner Cooling and Heating.

Memorial Day is coming May 25th and the Boerne Concert Band will host a patriotic concert in Main Plaza on Sunday night at 7.  The Boerne American Legion Post 313 will be back in Veterans Plaza at 10 on Monday morning, The VFW Post 688 will hold their ceremony at 11am in the Boerne Cemetery. 

And Chef Mark Sierra says every day is Memorial Day at Compadres Hill Country Cocina.  In fact The Today Show producers saw a story on how Chef Mark honors our Veterans, honors our flag, our fallen and Gold Star Families every Friday at noon in a KENS 5 story that earned them an Emmy.  So today The Today Show will be in Boerne shooting a special Memorial Day story with Chef Mark.  And it will focus on another gift Mark has and I asked him how he got the call.

Here’s Chef Mark: 

Mark says it’s business as usual - they will still be open for business - doors open at 11 for lunch and besides the usual lines out the door you might get there early because besides the great food, there will be a few cameras as well, and it may give Jenna Bush a chance to get back to Texas.

City Manager Ben Thatcher has released a statement on behalf of the City of Boerne on the Bravo Reality TV Show announcement. In the statement, he speaks on the fact that the City found out about the show essentially at the same time as the public, and was contacted by a production manager reaching out to the Parks Department for filming permits. He made it clear that the City of Boerne is not producing, sponsoring, endorsing, casting, or otherwise partnering in this television production. At this time, no formal permit application has been submitted, and no closures have been approved. 

Thatcher also acknowledged the public's concern given the lack of information, but that the City takes immense pride in the community and what Boerne stands for. He also clarified that Boerne is a Film-Friendly Texas Community and that guidelines were adopted in 2021 to manage filming activity in a way that protects residents and businesses. Although private filming on private property does not typically require the City’s permission, any use of public property will involve approval from the City. They  will continue to monitor the situation, respond appropriately to resident questions, and keep the Council informed if any formal permit applications or operational requests are submitted. 

Two memorial services were held to honor fallen heroes in our community during National Police Week. K9 Chico, who lost his life last year in the line of duty, was honored in Washington D.C. at the National Police K9 Memorial Service. His handler, Sgt. Moncada was invited to represent his fallen partner and honor his legacy beside other law enforcement. Yesterday was the Annual Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Memorial, a time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our community. In attendance were members from multiple Honor Guards, local leaders, and musicians who made the ceremony possible.

And by the Cibolo Center for Conservation, as this Saturday is their Spring Renewal Volunteer Workday -  Volunteers can sign up for a variety of projects that address erosion, aging infrastructure, habitat restoration, and campus appearance. They are also looking for skilled hands! Electricians, carpenters, and landscape architects are invited to help lead projects.)

Just a programming reminder that here on Boerne Radio tomorrow, we will carry game 1 of a best of 3 between La Joya and Boerne Champion. Winner heads to the regional finals- coverage will start at 6:45 right here on Boerne Radio. And if you’re curious, Boerne High lost to a worthy opponent in the Cedar Park Timberwolves. They advanced to the regional semis after defeating Legacy, and now they face Harlingen South. This Boerne High team just had a few signees and a lot of young talent… This team will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years. 

But speaking of Timberwolves, it’s the ones from Minnesota that have been giving a battle to the San Antonio Spurs. In game 5, the Spurs, including Wemby, took everything from game 4 and used it like gas to build a fire. The spark came from game 4 when Wemby was ejected. And that fire burned and spread- pushing and shoving, some trash talking, but in the end, the good guys win 126-97. The Spurs are now 1 win away from reaching the Western Conference Finals. Game 6 is Friday at 8:30.

Well it’s the buzz in Boerne and really quite fun…and sad.

A new Bravo TV reality series has been greenlit to officially begin filming in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, the working title for the show is “Secrets, Lies, Texas Wives” - The show's description reads, "In the heart of the Texas Hill Country is the picture‑perfect town of Boerne, where wealth, beauty, faith and family reign supreme” featuring a "tight-knit circle of glamorous women"...it will follow along with their lives as they navigate raising their children, running their family-run ranches, and managing "sparkling social calendars in a town rooted in rodeos and tradition." 

Alright so…lots to lots to break down here…1) rooted in rodeos?  They ain’t from here. 2) sparkling social calendars?  Hey when is that bunco group meeting again?  3) Secrets, Lies, Texas Wives - it rhymes…but here’s a secret…a lot of folks fled Hollywood to come to Boerne…and according to Kendall at Taylor’s Ace, the luxury drama she sees in their store is arguing over paint colors, and whose husband forgot to bring home the propane.

 

Boerne Firefighter Santiago Anaya recently led a fire prevention presentation in Spanish at Fabra Elementary School, helping students learn key safety lessons in a language they understand. The program, held in partnership with Boerne ISD, covered smoke alarms, home escape plans, and what to do in an emergency. Fire officials say the bilingual outreach helps lifesaving information reach students and their families across the community. 

 

Hill Country Family Services has a new wish list for the month of May,  highlighting the current greatest needs for the corner cupboard. This month they are asking for donations of dish soap, cereal, small cans of coffee, strawberry jam, canned peaches and laundry soap. But cash is where your dollar goes the furthest thanks to the food bank - $25 feeds a family of 4 for a week!  See what I mean at hcfstx.org.
