I think we owe it to Boerne’s newest A-list celebrity, Elizabeth Leachman for her heroic 5000m sprint last night. A watch party was being held at Tre Pizzeria down Main Street, and I am sure others had a barbecue or two in honor of the Champion all-star. Even the NBC commentators were amazed by her being only 16 years old… she didn’t qualify as she was up against some seasoned vets, that quite literally gave her a run for her money. She would finish 26th overall with a time of 16:36.67. But how many people in this world can say they ran their first Olympic race at age 16?-Not too many I assume. Congratulations Elizabeth, you represent this great city very well, and you will be back next year!

The Gunslingers are in Northern Arizona tonight to take on the Wranglers. San Antonio has 4 games left, including this one, to improve their record. Kickoff is at 6:05.

We’ve got some names from the Boerne Champion Chargers to acknowledge this Thursday. We’ll start with two swimmers who had times in the top 100 nationally. Bexon Harrison was awarded All-American by the NISCA in the boys 50 freestyle, and Kate Canales picked up an award in the girls 100 breaststroke. 

The THSCA has released their Super Elite Team and a few Chargers happen to be on it… Jordan Ballin and Sawyer Smith both made the elite team while Evan Kuhl was awarded the Gold Glove Award. 

The Champion Chargers- always a force to be reckoned with. 

Speaking of “forces to be reckoned with,” you would think that’d be the Spurs last night with two top 10 picks in the draft. On pick 4, the Spurs selected who they were aligned to pick in many mock drafts earlier this month and that was Stephon Castle, recent champion from UConn… but when their turn came again on pick 8, they ended up selecting Rob Dillingham from Kentucky… then traded him seconds later to Minnesota for some future picks. Now, I really don’t know what the strategy is here, but I know for sure fans were not happy about the blindside from the Spurs.. Only time will tell what the move was about. The draft continues tonight at 7… The Spurs have the 5th and 18th picks this time around.

Boerne Radio Sports - June 27, 2024

It’s Thursday June 27th. 

And a special Happy Birthday to Leigh Nash - an artist you hear on Boerne Radio with her band Sixpence None the Richer.  Leigh Nash lives and records in Nashville but was born and raised in New Braunfels, Texas. In fact I was the first guy in the country to play Sixpence None the Richer off their demo cassette…just sayin’

Can you smell the kettle corn?  The funnel cakes and fried Oreos and the other smell from the ag barn?….it must be the 118th Kendall County Fair coming to town!  The event with live music, tasty food and a full rodeo will take place August 30th through September 1st.  Tickets are now on sale, and for a limited time they are selling a weekend pass where for $45 you can go to the event all 3 days! And if you wanna sign up your kid for mutton bustin’ , you can already register them at KCFA.org. 

Spectrum is moving on from Old San Antonio Road, and will now be focusing on replacing the fiber lines on E. Bandera. The work should be completed by tomorrow, and will occur between South Main and Frey. Make sure to watch out for flaggers, and respect the crews working in 95 degree heat. 

If you did watch the city council meeting this past Tuesday - you might have noticed District 4 City Councilman Bret Bunker was missing?  The man in real life is the social studies coordinator for Boerne ISD - and he has a pretty good reason why he wasn’t in attendance. He was a part of a group from Boerne ISD that attended the 32nd Annual Model Schools Conference where our district was heavily highlighted. The group was selected to make two presentations, one on College, Career and Military Readiness, and the other on Professional Learning.   Mr. Bunker you get a pass.

In 1852, Gustav Theissen purchased 1,100 acres of land and with surveyor John James and platted the townsite named Boerne. The name was in honor of German-Jewish satirist and political writer Karl Ludwig Börne who had died in France fifteen years earlier. Theissen and James also helped settle Sisterdale. With the hope of new economic opportunities and freedoms, a German-based organization, known as the Adelsverein, eventually caught wind of this territory and initiated mass immigration. Theissen was later known as a Wall Street financial wizard.
