The Boerne Greyhounds are still dancing and now have their next challenge in the playoffs…. The 4A Regional semifinals will be against Bishop High School. Game 1 is Thursday at 6 at Jourdanton, game 2 will be Friday at 1pm at the Wolff, and game 2, if needed, will be Saturday, 11am at Coastal Bend College. Victor Wembanyama gets another recognition by the NBA, making this year’s NBA All-Rookie Team. Chet Holmgren of Oklahoma City tied with him, receiving 198 points each to make the ‘first-team’ distinctions. Tonight, NBA All-Defensive teams will be announced. 

The Astros lost to the Angels last night, 9-7. The Rangers are in Philly for the first time this year with the first pitch set for 5:40. And the Missions continue their road trip in Wichita against the Wind Surge with the first pitch schedule for 7:05.

Boerne Radio Sports - May 21, 2024

Another academic year has come and gone, and that unfortunately means we won’t have any high school action until August… but that doesn’t mean we can’t look to the future- The Boerne Greyhounds will compete at the 5A level for the first time in school history starting in the fall…but the Champion Chargers were just awarded the Dan Cook Cup from the Express News, which is awarded to the best high school athletic program in the area! That’s amazing, considering all that’s happened from a first-year football coach to Elizabeth Leachman’s record-breaking year. 

Over to the diamond in pro baseball- The Missions drop Sunday’s game against Frisco, 5-2. They begin another series tomorrow against Midland. The Astros lose another to Minnesota, 4-3. Houston is now 26-34. The Rangers shutout the Marlins, 6-0. Texas is 29-30 on the season.

You might guess Over the  Rainbow by Judy Garland, Kate Smith’s God Bless America, or a big band leader like Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey…But your winner is the Polka King Will Glahe with the Beer Barrel Polka.

So school's out of course and if the kids are already yelling that they’re bored, the Nature and Art Summer Camps at The Cibolo Center for Conservation is happening every week in June, and July - they will learn archery, do STEM activities, play games, sing songs, and of course explore nature.  Learn more at cibolo.org.

Do you know who Jesse James is …no not the Texas outlaw, no..,not the Texas boxer…but the Texas welder based in Austin of the Discovery Channels' Motorcycle Mania, Monster Garage, and Spike TVs  Jesse James is a Dead Man…The welding students at Champion High School recently got to work with Jesse James last week. With close to a million followers on Instagram and a whole lot of experience, he demonstrated some of his techniques and shared stories from his life. The Champion students worked with him at the Champion Ranch, and film crews caught some of the action.  We’ll keep you posted on when it will air.

And looking ahead to next Monday, the Kendall County Historical Commission is holding a celebration of a historic Texan event. The commemoration is dedicated to the 180th anniversary of a confrontation between 15 Texas Rangers and 75 Comanche known as the Battle of Walker’s Creek…there the Rangers used a new invention - the Paterson Colt 36 revolving pistol…and changed the game in the West.  If you would like to participate, the ceremony will be at the Patrick Heath Public Library - again next Monday starting at 10 in the morning.

Boerne Radio presents Boerne Texas History brought to you by Kendall County Roofing, as we salute our  Boerne ISD Schools.  

Today we recognize Voss Middle School.  The story of Captain Mark Tyler Voss … right after this.

Voss Middle School off  46 just past 3351 is named after Captain Mark Tyler Voss.  After graduating from Boerne High School in 2004, he went on to the United States Air Force Academy. Captain Voss received his wings in 2010 and died in the line of duty in Kyrgyzstan in 2013. At the conclusion of the ribbon cutting ceremony for Voss Middle School, a four-ship F-16 flyover by the Colorado Air National Guard was conducted by Voss’ roommate from the Academy.
