Headlines: Champions wins quick game 1 over Sharyland / Rangers beat Astros in First Meeting / Proposal submitted to rename SAT airport ‘Gregg Popovich International Airport’

Friday 5/16

This is Boerne Radio Sports, I am Esteban Serrano… good day sports fans.

As heard here on Boerne Radio, the 5A regional semifinals between Champion and Sharyland got underway from Corpus with Game 1 last night… With a runner on in the bottom of the first, an error on the Champion defense at the plate got Sharyland their first run. The game started at 6:55 and we were in the 5th inning by the 8 o’clock hour… a hidden ball trick attempted by Sharyland almost worked, getting the Champion player Patrick Hall at 3rd… I’ll let Bobby Stautzenberger explain it:

Audio: Hidden Ball Trick

Yep, a big no-no, you can’t do that… And then the bad luck seemed to continue for Sharyland. Tied at 1 now at this point and a dropped routine flyball was the result of Champion’s lead-taking run the next inning and the batter is Sawyer Smith…

And this is how it ended…

Audio: Grizzafi final out

Sawyer Smith the pitcher had 5-consecutive shutout innings… a huge factor… and the Chargers take game 1, by a score of 2-1. Game two is today at 5 and coverage starts at 4:45… can the Chargers close it out and head to the regional finals next week? Find out today here on Boerne Radio.

The Rangers and the Astros meet for the first time this season in Arlington to commence the Silver Boot Series. Rangers take game one of this weekend series with a final score of 1-0. With this win, Texas’ Bruce Bochy passes Sparky Anderson for 6th-most wins all-time as an MLB manager. The series will continue tonight through Sunday.

How does ‘Gregg Popovich International Airport’ sound? San Antonio Councilman Manny Pelaez submitted a formal request to City Council this week to officially rename the San Antonio International Airport to honor Gregg Popovich, and it is claimed to be a reminder of the legacy he has left in the city as the longtime Spurs coach.
