This is Boerne Radio Sports, I’m Esteban Serrano. 

Historic night for Boerne ISD as it was the first ever meeting between Boerne and Champion in baseball- and it was a good game to break ice in district. And like any competitive game in Boerne, it seems like these two schools would go extras and that’s exactly what happened. No score, we were tied at zero for 7 innings and that means we need extras. The game ended on, get this, a wild pitch… gotta feel for Champion but the Hounds get the W, 1-0. Walker Hill was the one who crossed the plate to win, and Campbell Jackson went the distance pitching with no runs and 10 strikeouts. They play each other again Friday, with Champion hosting this time around.

The Spurs lose in Detroit 122-96. Devin Vassell recorded 26 points and Steph Castle had 19. 

And hey, happy opening day eve! That’s right, MLB baseball starts its 2025 season tomorrow. All teams will be in action - the Rangers host the Red Sox in Arlington at 3:05, and the Astros host the Mets in Houston starting five minutes after, at 3:10.

Headlines: Greyhounds go 10-6 in district/Champion Wins District 11-4  Record/Astros 5-1 Win Over Toronto

The Greyhound baseball team suffered a loss to New Braunfels 5-4 yesterday. Why this matters by the numbers is that Boerne goes to 10-6 in district 26. Here’s how the standings are, and disclaimer, it’s quite literally anyone’s district. After last night:


Boerne Champion wins the district last night with an 11-4 record after beating Tivy 11-1. So the 3 bottom spots in the district remain. 


The Unicorns after last night improved to 10-4, but hold one head-to-head over Boerne which places them in front.


Then Pieper holds the 3rd place at 10-5 and now the Greyhounds are 4th with a 10-6 record.


Smithson Valley is also in the hunt with a game to go at 9-5.

Talk about anyone’s district… well the good news is there’s only a game or two left depending on the school, and a lot can happen. The Greyhounds get another shot at the Unicorns Friday at 7. 

Speaking of anything can happen, the Houston Astros- it’s way too early in the season to project a postseason presence. But after the 5-1 win over Toronto yesterday, they go 12-11 and have a winning record for the first time this season. They’ve jumped over the A’s to handle the 4th place spot in the AL West for now. A little win streak could make them competitive prior to the All-Star Break come July.

Robert Oppenheimer was born on this day in 1904 - he’s the American physicist known as the father of the atomic bomb. The movie grossed $330 million domestically, and made almost a billion dollars world wide.  It did not bomb.

 

The Kendall County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the Boerne Police Department, is actively continuing the investigation into Richard Hovey Sr., Richard Hovey Jr., and their businesses: Hovey Motor Cars, Triad Motors, and Luxury and Classic Cars of Boerne. If you were a former victim, employee, or vendor of Hovey Motor Cars after 2018 when the business was moved from San Antonio to Boerne, you’re asked to reach out to the Criminal District Attorney office via email: CDA@co.kendall.tx.us.

 

The City Council Meeting was last night, and here are some of the highlights. The council heard about the changes being made to the mowing contract for this summer, which includes added areas maintained by the parks department and TXDot, increased mowing frequency and preserving wildflowers until Father’s Day. They also got an update on the rebate opportunities granted to Boerne-ites for taking conservation efforts; 52 people qualified for rebates this year because of their irrigation system consultation. There is a new rebate option that would get you $150 off your water bill if you replace 200 square feet of turf grass with a drought tolerant landscape. 

Water was also a topic with potential new restrictions at each level….and 

TXDot has also approved the funding for traffic signal illuminated sign upgrades. 

 

The Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corp is working with the Boerne Chamber and other partners to understand the local workforce and needs your help. Your responses will help guide important decisions and programs focused on workforce development, job training, and meeting current and future labor needs in our community. Early Voting stars today…in Boerne the place to go is Kendall County Annex on Fawn Valley Drive across from the Boerne High Baseball field.

The Boerne Star interviewed the six candidates running for City Council in Fair Oaks, and here are some of the highlights from their story published over the weekend. When asked about the proposed City Center that is close to development, candidates Rose, Ross and Cox were against it, Parker and Olvera were weighing the pros and cons, and Pearson was firmly for it. The candidates were also asked how they would work to preserve the serene feel of the community despite it’s continued growth, as well as transportation and traffic concerns.  You can subscribe to the Boerne Star at boernestar.com where a digital subscription is just .66cents an issue.

    

The City of Boerne’s Code Compliance and Planning & Permitting Departments are teaming up to host a Peanut Butter drive now through April 30th for the Blessings in a Backpack Program, which provides weekend meals for more than 600 Boerne kids who rely on school provided lunches during the week. You can drop off your jars in the Peanut Butter Drive Box located in the 1st and 2nd floor lobbies at City Hall.  

 

And when you go, salute the new Boerne City flag on the flag pole that debuted yesterday - thanks for the scoop from the Boerne Life. 

 

Spring Cleaning is in full effect…WM, who is responsible for bulky trash pickup, has notified Boerne Utilities that there were some delays last week with their scheduled collection. Crews will continue this week to pick them up. You can still put your trash and recycling out on your normal day despite this hiccup, and everything should be collected by the end of the week.
