Headlines: update on high school bball/Geneva coach hits 100th career win/Bob Uecker passes away
Friday 1/17
This is Boerne Radio Sports, I am Esteban Serrano.
Tonight, the Boerne boys and girls basketball teams will face Smithson Valley. The boys will take the ol’ Greyhound bus on the road and the girls will stay home. Games will tip at 6:30. Both Boerne Champion teams will have games against Alamo Heights. Boys will host and girls on the road. And the Geneva girls will host John Paul II at 6:15.
By the way, Geneva boys coach Julius McNeal hit a huge milestone the other night- in only his 5th season, he has earned his 100th career win. Quite the accomplishment indeed… Here's to 100 more!
I mentioned the other day how close baseball season was- Champion was getting the party started early with their Navy-Silver preseason series ahead of tryouts. Team Silver won in 3 games, with a final score of 6-4 in game 3.
The world of baseball lost an icon- Bob Uecker: catcher, announcer, and comedian passed away yesterday after a battle with cancer. He was a Major League catcher for 6 years before starting a career in radio broadcasting with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971 and worked there for over five decades, but he became famous for playing the hilarious Harry Doyle in the ‘Major League’ movie franchise. His infamous line, “just a bit outside!” in reaction to Charlie Sheen’s character throwing a wild pitch was one of his most-memorable lines from the sports cinema classic. He was 90 years old.
