Champion Water Polo had a big day- for a chance to advance to the next round in the playoffs, the boys were up against Johnson, and the girls played Alamo Heights. Long story short, both teams ended up winning and the girls got their first playoff win in history. The Chargers are Area Champions.

Geneva and New Braunfels Christian was a real dogfight… both teams laid it all on the line it seemed like. The Eagles out scored New Braunfels Christian 21-7, and was trailing 48-42… a late comeback for the Eagles with only a little gas in the tank… and they fell short. Final score was a very close 51-48.

Tonight on Boerne Radio… The Champion Chargers will be in New Braunfels to face the Unicorns. Its Fired Up Friday starting at 5, then pregame at 6:30. The Greyhounds vs Harlandale will be replayed following the live broadcast.

Boerne Radio Sports - Friday, October 11, 2024

After a much-needed bye week, the Greyhounds and Chargers were back on the gridiron.

Let’s start in New Braunfels where the Chargers had a date with the Unicorns, as heard here on Boerne Radio. This would be a marquee game in the San Antonio area just because of the offense, and it didn’t disappoint. Chargers were up 28-21 at the half, and Julian Navarette would have over 250 passing yards… but New Braunfels would get the ball right back to start the half, then took the lead after a turnover. Chargers just couldn’t hang on, and drop their 3rd-straight, 49-34.

A different story in Boerne Greyhounds hosted Harlandale at BISD Stadium… and was completely it one-sided. Going up 28-0 at the half, QB Hank Hendrix was the JW player of the game for the Greyhounds and they win 49-21 - over the Indians - with 459 yards (29 rushing) - as a team 603 total yards.  Coach Hendrix now obtains a career record of 61-20. Very impressive! 

Big game today for the Texas Longhorns and they play their first Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma with both being members of the SEC. Texas is ranked #1, and Oklahoma at #18…. Longhorns are 5-0, and The Sooners are 4-1. Do what you will with that info!

It is Friday October 11th.

And born on this date in 1884 was Eleanor Roosevelt - She served as First Lady of the United States during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms in office and known for her support of civil rights.  And did you know that her maiden name was Roosevelt - FDR and her were 5th cousins once removed as her Uncle Theodore Roosevelt walked her down the aisle in 1905 just 13 days after he began his presidency.

Three Juniors at Geneva High School were named as 2024 Regional Scholars for the Classic Learning Test, which is a standardized exam that combines knowledge and virtue. Brady Chandler, Samuel Crews and Jonathan Taylor were within the top 5% of test takers in the region. Crews and Taylor were also named CLT10 National Award Recipients because they were in the top 50 scores in the country! Taylor claimed the top spot at Geneva, but both of them were awarded $2500 each.

The Boerne City Council meeting occurred a couple nights ago and here are some of the highlights. The Council accepted the donation of a bronze sculpture by Bryden and Kay Moon called The Runner that’s approximately 5 feet tall of a girl stretching before a run to be displayed in Boerne City Park.   Its estimated value is about $40,000.  Parks and Recreation Director Lisette Jimenez presented the council with improvements to be made to Toepperwein Rd. including a revised parking lot, road widening and drainage elements. She also discussed the work going to be done on Northside Community Park. 

And a reminder this weekend is the Rod Run so Main Street will be blocked off between Blanco and River Road and around the Main Plaza and the Courthouse pretty much all day on Saturday between 6am and 5pm -

And as we get more information on Hurricane Milton, Boerne Radio strongly encourages you to donate $10, $100 or $1000 to Samaritan's Purse as they have boots on the ground in the Carolinas there in Billy Graham’s backyard helping the victims of Hurricane Helene - and it was on this date before they had names The Great Hurricane of 1780 killed 20-30,000 people in the Caribbean - Climate Change scientists of 1780 were not available for comment.

The Boerne Fire Department has been awarded nearly $2 million from FEMA as part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.  This grant will be pivotal in expanding the department’s workforce as Boerne grows and prepares to open its second fire station.

The grant will allow the City to hire six additional full-time firefighters and move the department closer to meeting national staffing standards while enhancing 24-hour emergency coverage across our 200-square-mile service territory.

The end of an era occurred yesterday on Main Street with the demolition of the old Plaza Liquor Store where Doug Dugosh was known to tell his stories.  This broadcaster had the Divine opportunity to meet him on his afternoon walk about 4 years ago and hear some of history around Main Street.
