Boerne Radio Sports!

A general announcement from the district- because of the expected freezing weather blowing through the Hill Country, the district is rescheduling events this weekend… and it doesn’t seem to be affecting sports at the moment. Be safe out there.

Good results from the diving competition down at Southwest High School. Champion’s Jada Green finished first in the category and Gavin Richmond finished second. Today, swimming will take place and both Boerne ISD high schools will be there. Saturday, Geneva Swim will compete at their TAPPS regionals competition. 

And some news from the district sports page on X- Champion Tennis Coach Joey Cantu was named the Athletic Director at Pearsall ISD. Combined, he has been with Boerne ISD for 25 years.

It’s Friday January 23rd. 

 

And born on this date was Fred Morrison in 1920. He was an American inventor who was inspired when he and his fiance tossed a cake pan back and forth on the beach.  At the age of 17 in 1937 he secured the patent for The Frisbee. And some big Boerne Birthdays today include Krystal Chittenden, Horst Wasel and Judith Rivers of the Rivers Team…tomorrow it’s Matthew Surber your pastor at Mission City, and on Sunday Jacques DuBose - not our world famous weatherman, but his father, who also happens to be a BBBVIP, and oh yeah…he’s running for Congress.

 

Alright - where would do you like to begin?  So the rain won’t start until after the sun goes down.

Due to pending weather, the Saturday performance of “Barefoot In the Park” at the Boerne Community Theatre has been cancelled. If you already bought tickets for this weekend, the theatre can move your tickets to next weekend.  Boerne ISD is rescheduling all district and campus events for Saturday and Sunday.  Classes for Monday are still on as of this report, they will give an official update on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Kendall County Office of Emergency Management and the City of Boerne are encouraging residents to prepare for the upcoming winter weather by taking care of the 4 p’s-people, pets, plants and pipes.  And remember the other Boerne Radio 4 P’s - stay in your PJ’s, Pop some Pop Corn, Order a Pizza, and keep listening to Boerne Radio for some Peter, Paul,and Prince….Or Parker, Porter and Patsy if you’re a little bit country…I’m a little bit rock and roll.

 

Another reminder that if you power goes out and it starts to get cold where you live, Hill Country Family Services and the Patrick Heath Public Library has the plan for you.

Some news yesterday and it has to do with soccer games in the district. Both high schools have changed game times because of the expected arctic freeze starting Friday. Today, Champion will play Alamo Heights both at 7:15. The Charger girls will be on the road for this one. Tomorrow, Boerne and Smithson Valley will have their scheduled games- with the girls at 4, and the boys at 4:30. The boys will hit the road for this match. 

On the subject of soccer, Boerne High’s own Mahaley Merkens announced she has verbally committed to Concordia University in Austin to continue her soccer and academic careers. She wrote in an X post, “First and Foremost, I want to give all glory to God for this opportunity. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have supported me throughout this journey.”

And the Express News named Champion Wide Receiver Brogan Dempsey to All-Area Offense… he recorded just over 1300 yards and rushed for only 57. However, that 1300 is quite a number. Well deserved by the senior. 

In Boerne Bowling News, the Tom Dugosh Bowling League met last week and Frosty Readel had the hot hand in both the highest game score, and highest 3 game series with a 236 and a 639. Your top teams names are ‘Solid 10’ with a record of 108 and 60 followed by ‘Beer 4 My Horses’, and’ Kingpins’. True athletes right here in Boerne.

And it was on this date in 1957 that someone got a big break when she won a talent contest on TV’s Aurthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts…the song she sang was Walkin’ after Midnight and the winner was Patsy Cline.

The big news this week in Boerne and Texas and the country is the winter storm heading our way. The City of Boerne is getting prepared. The Streets department has prepped Salt Trucks to deploy this weekend, specifically focusing on ice-covered bridges and roadways. Water, gas and electric lines have also been “winterized”-crews inspected these lines with infrared technology to identify areas susceptible to icy conditions. Tree branches above lines have also been trimmed, bathroom facilities have been secured and water mains turned off. 

 

 If you find yourself without power, the Patrick Heath Public Library will serve as a warming station this Saturday and Sunday.  The Cibolo Farmer’s Market has also been preemptively canceled in response to the inclement weather. 

 

The Kendall County Commissioners Court voted this week to accept a $1 million grant from the Texas Water Development Board for flood warning systems. In September, the Texas Legislature approved more than $50 million in funding for flood warning systems and flood mitigation projects for counties affected by floods in July. Although no Kendall County residents died in the floods, nine of the missing bodies were discovered here, so the state wanted to ensure that each county was accounted and taken care of.
