Headlines: Greyhounds dominate Softball Opener / Geneva girls Soccer snags big win / Spurs lose in Boston

On day zero of the new softball season, the lady Hounds didn’t disappoint. Considering the temperature had dipped like an elevator, they ended the game in a run-rule, defeating Wagner 14-4. Like the saying suggests- You can’t win them all if you don’t win the first. 

And talk about winning in style, the Lady Eagles soccer team pulled off a 6-0 shutout win over Holy Cross last night- and a big one for a district matchup.

The Spurs, not so lucky in the win-column. They had to face one of the best Eastern Conference teams in the Boston Celtics… and do they know how to shoot from beyond the arc… final was 116-103. The Spurs will now hit the All-Star break before coming back next Thursday when they play Phoenix in Austin as apart of their I-35 series.

It’s Friday March 21st. 

On this date in 1952 was the first ever Rock and Roll Concert, which was held at the Cleveland Arena and organized by Alan Freed…the man credited with coining the phrase Rock and Roll. The Moondog Coronation Ball had headliners such as Paul Williams and Tiny Grimes, as well as The Dominoes and Danny Cobb. Tickets were only $1.75 at the door, and was carried live on WJW 850AM.

More announced businesses coming to Boerne in Boerne Town Center there along I-10 and Norris Lane - Sprouts Farmers Market will be the main anchor of the complex a grocery story that leans more organic than most, plus the names that you may already know about Nothing Bundt Cakes, Panda Express, McAlister’s Deli, Chicken Salad Chick, and Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers. Hopefully by the time football season rolls around we’ll have another place to hang after the game… because the kids dig Chicken Salad Chick.

And some news from our neighbors Northeast of us - MyCanyonLake.com reported the Texas Water Company is pausing new service commitments for nine proposed developments in Comal County citing rapid growth and drought. TWC provides service to approximately 78,000 people through 26,000 water and wastewater service connections in  Kendall, Comal, Blanco, Bandera, Medina, Hays, and Travis counties.

Another nice award landing in Boerne…Texas High School Football Magazine - have you heard of that? -  was picking out Players of the Year and in the TAPPS Cagetory for Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools - Geneva Eagle Brady Chandler earns the title of Player of the Year.  #TalonsUp

What a crazy night in Buda Texas where The Boerne Greyhound Soccer Team was in the Bi-District Playoff match against Liberty Hill - they led 1-0 at the half, then in the 2nd half Liberty Hill earned a penalty kick to tie it up, Boerne scores again on a header off a throw-in…and then with 41 seconds left in the game the Panthers were awarded another penalty kick to tie it up…that means overtime.  Boerne Star Sports Editor Kerry Barboza was there to witness the action…Kerry, how did it end?

Again…this is the part where we remind you - last year we were 4A, this year 5A and the Greyhounds made the playoffs.  So proud of the Hounds!

The 13-2 Boerne Greyhound Baseball Team is back at it tonight against District rival Smithson Valley who are 10-5 - first pitch is at 7:00.  The 12-4 Champion Chargers are playing away at Alamo Heights tonight - the Mules are only 4-10 with 1 tie. 

On the girl's softball side the 7-5 Greyhounds face 4-12 Wagner on the road.  The Lady Chargers are also on the road again, a tough Veterans Memorial who are 11-2.  Champion is coming off a 7-3 win on Tuesday night against Kerrville Tivy.

The Lady Eagles of Geneva clobbered Lutheran High School after 3 innings thanks to the 15-run mercy rule. Reese Smith had 3 RBIs, Madeline Egbert had a double, a triple, and 4 RBIs, Kate Friesenhahn went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs, and Carlyle Harden also went 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs. The final score there was 22 to 6

In Tennis Geneva School of Boerne got a big win over San Antonio Christian School - 12 matches to 5.  They head to San Marcos today for more tournament play, and the big district tournament in New Braunfels a week from today.

Congratulations to Boerne Greyhound Girls Basketball stars Jenna Ruede and Chloe Donnell - both have now been recognized by The Texas Girls Coaches Association - making the All-State Team for Basketball.  They were also named Academic All-State along with Savannah Salinas for their outstanding effort in the classroom!  They play hard…they play smart.

More nods to some great female athletes at Geneva - Hadessa Hochart and Kate Friesenhahn were honored by making the TAPPS 4A All-State Tournament Team for their Soccer performance at the State Tournament. 

It looks like a football score, but yesterday, the Geneva boys' baseball team had a big win —they beat District rivals John Paul II in Schertz 21-10.

And how about our Boerne Boys Baseball team going against a very tough Smithson Valley…Walker Hill went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, Ryan Hooper had a clutch 2 RBI double near the end, and on the mound Campbell Jackson and Hudson McNew got it done…Greyhounds win 11-6!

So are the Spurs going to tank the rest of the season to increase the odds of a better draft pick with no Victor, no Fox?  Well not based on last nights game - Power Forward Sandro Mamu had the biggest game of his career with 34 points and 9 rebounds in their 105 to 120 victory.  The Spurs players mobbed Mamu after the game, and his post-game interview on the floor was crashed by Flavor Flav.   Spurs play tomorrow night at home against the 76ers.
