Today is Earth Day, as founded by the Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 by President Clinton.

 

Also happy birthday to Esther Torres here in Boerne.  Esther, you share your birthday with Peter Frampton who turns 76 today,  Jack Nicholson 89, and born 100 years ago today was Charlotte Rae who played Mrs. Garrett on the Facts of Life.

 

A new Bible-based character education program is coming to Boerne ISD this fall. LifeWise Academy will offer off-campus religious instruction during the school day for students with parent permission. The privately funded program will launch at Curington and Fabra Elementary schools, with plans to expand. Organizers say the program focuses on character development and has shown positive impacts in other communities. Pre-enrollment is now open for interested families. The famous Victory or Death letter sent by William Barrett Travis got a special tribute yesterday here in Kendall County, making us the 39th County to do so. In the ceremony was the Presentation of Colors by the Kendall County Honor Guard, “Texas, Our Texas” was sung and led by Kendall County Constable Brian Vaughn, and Errol Flannery, the 4th great grandson of Davy Crockett, read Colonel Travis’ letter. There is now a dedicated plaque with the letter in front of the old courthouse and jail museum. This event and plaque only happened thanks to the hard work of the Kendall County Historical Commission and the Alamo Letter Society.

Boerne ISD held their Incubator Final Pitch Night yesterday, giving student entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their business ideas that they’ve developed over the school year. Teams presented to local sponsors for the opportunity to earn startup funding and turn their ideas into real ventures.

The Spurs play the Trail Blazers in Portland tomorrow night in game 3 of the playoffs in a series tied up at 1 apiece, hear more details in the Boerne Radio Sports report at the bottom of the hour, but for the record the game we won on Sunday saw the presentation of the colors with an Honour Guard team with members from the Boerne Police Department and Fire Department, Kendall County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Marshall, and the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.  Go Boerne Go.

 

Our friends at the BoerneLife.com broke the news of Phase 2 of the Boerne Town Center.  More national chains are on the way to populate our portion of I-10 oceanfront property.   Here comes the Jimmy John’s, Wing Stop, Wag N’ Wash, and Palm Beach & Tan…there’s your ocean front.  Many of the businesses from Phase 1 are looking to open next month.

 

Cibolo Creek Bridge will be reduced to one lane in Fair Oaks Ranch today, work operations are expected to end by 5 with traffic control assisted by flaggers and law enforcement.

The Champion home game against New Braunfels originally scheduled for Tuesday was now moved to today, but will be played in New Braunfels. The first pitch is scheduled for 7. 

Parker Eiland, the quarterback of the Geneva Eagles, is coming up on his senior season in August. He’s already getting offers… he recently visited Southwestern and now has an offer from them. It’s also his first offer, and should he decide to go there, the pirates would be getting a talented QB. But we’ll batten down the hatches and see if he can strike gold as an Eagle one last time this fall. 

The Spurs’ Keldon Johnson now joins Manu Ginobili as the only 2 Spurs to win the 6th Man of the Year. His role off the bench has helped the Spurs this season for sure… Shams Charania from ESPN also reported that Wemby participated in cardio workouts last night. Another concussion evaluation will likely take place tomorrow. He is expected to travel with the team for Friday is a good thing, whether or not he plays in the game is the million dollar question. 

The NFL Draft starts tonight, and the Cowboys have two first round picks to use. They’ll be picking 12th and 20th. The Texans only have one pick- #28 on the draft board. We’ll have results on tomorrow’s report.

We have some important news involving the Spurs… but first…

Games have either been postponed or rescheduled from yesterday due to weather. Champion vs Tivy baseball will be made up on a date to be announced. Boerne High baseball will now play New Braunfels in New Braunfels tonight at 7. Comfort will now head to Llano tonight at 7. And Geneva baseball’s game is moved to 2pm today at Robstown to take on Corpus Christi Incarnate Word. 

Champion girl’s basketball is also getting a new head coach- Richard Herr with 13 combined years of experience comes most recently from Smithson Valley. His vision heading into next season is to develop players, build teams, and importantly, win. 

To make a long story short, the Spurs fell in game two to the Trailblazers, 106-103. The series is tied 1-1 now… lovely… although not the headline at all last night. Victor Wembanyama was taken into the locker room in the 2nd quarter and is now under concussion protocol after hitting the deck disturbingly hard on a layup attempt. Per NBA rules, he has to be on protocol for 48 hours before a second evaluation. The timing is promising as game three is Friday and not Thursday. However, the series now heads to Oregon. Harrison Barnes was also removed from the game but did return to the bench after a hit on the wrist. Numbers-wise, the Spurs were 38 of 86 from the field. Not a good night at all for the Spurs. The reassuring thing is that it is not over yet.
