And born on this date 101 years ago today in 1923 was American Astronaut Alan Shepard. He was one of the seven original Project Mercury astronauts, the first American in space in 1961, the 5th man to walk on the moon in 1971, and on that same trip the first to play golf on the moon…with a 6 iron head and a couple of balls he smuggled in a sock.
Big announcements were made last night at the Boerne ISD Board Meeting.
Champion High School has an official new principal in Natalie Benke in a unanimous decision. Mrs. Benke has been the interim principal since September, as before that she was the Academic Dean.
Another huge headline was the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees approved a mid-year compensation adjustment to school employees as a show of appreciation…more specifically starting on January 1st, hourly employees will get a $1.25 an hour bump. And a retention incentive was approved for all teachers and employes in the amount of $300. Boerne ISD says it also remains optimistic about increased financial support for public schools in the upcoming legislative session, as Dr. Craft is fighting for fair funding from the State of Texas.
The Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center was blessed yesterday with the Frost Bank For Good Fund grant. Their longtime volunteer, Charissa Jones Parkhill, works for Frost Bank and nominated the non-profit because of their positive impact on the community and the families they serve.
And the City of Boerne co-sponsored The One Water Conference last week in New Braunfels in order to encourage sustainability across the greater San Antonio area. The conference focused on the “One Water” approach, which views all water – drinking water, waste, storm, and recycled– as a unified resource. The conference underscored the importance of regional collaboration in water management and highlighted the City’s dedication.
