It’s Monday, September 7th. 

And born on this date in 1936 in Lubbock Texas was the late great Buddy Holly.  John Lennon’s band The Quarrymen saw Buddy Holly perform LIVE before the Beatles covered Buddy Holly’s version of Words of Love on their Beatles for Sale record...and it's probably not a coincidence that The Beatles' name was inspired by Buddy Holly’s band named...The Crickets.

And here in Boerne, we say happy birthday to rock star Torrie Rogers Ulfig, Amador Gonzalez, April Frazee over at April’s Art Haus, Daphne Luttrell, Fred Flessner at Prime EquiFi, Richard Castellanos in his Tuff Shef, and Carol Hitt.  You guys also share you birthday with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders; she is 75, and Gloria Gaynor is still surviving…she is 83.

And today is Labor Day!  City offices and the Patrick Heath Public Library are closed today.  But if today is your normal trash or recycling day, kick ‘em to the curb, they are coming.

If you go out and about today, make sure you thank the laborers behind the counter, serving your food, the healthcare employees, and the first responders working today.  (Hey…what about broadcasters).

The City of Boerne and Parks and Rec department have opened a new green space along Cibolo Creek adjacent to River Road Park. The property was purchased from a family that wanted to preserve the land in 2024, and is nearly 1.25 acres. The floods on July 4th removed a lot of the fencing that separated the property from the park, but Parks and Rec staff decided to leave it accessible to the public. Residents and visitors can now use the creekside portion of the property for fishing, passive recreation, or simply enjoying the Cibolo Creek. The existing home and rear portion of the property remain closed to the public while the City continues evaluating future options for the site. 

Boerne will celebrate Constitution Week September 17th through the 23rd. The George W. Kendall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will feature special Constitution displays at the Patrick Heath Public Library throughout the week. Mayor Frank Ritchie will read a Constitution Week proclamation at the library on September 16th at 9:30 a.m. Then on September 17th at 3 p.m., Boerne residents are invited to join “Bells Across America” by ringing a bell for one minute and reciting the Preamble to the Constitution.

As heard on Boerne Radio last Friday, students and staff at Herff Elementary School sheltered in place and were evacuated after there were reports of gunshots in the area. The incident occurred after school hours, so the number of people on campus was minimal. Law enforcement established a presence at about 4:30, and worked to safely conduct an investigation. As it turned out, there was no danger to the public-neighbors of the school confirmed they were dove hunting at the time the reported shots were heard.
