We love to laugh the day away in the Merry Old Land of Boerne, especially on this day in history! In 1939, the Wizard of Oz hit theaters. Although initially a box office flop, the film was resurrected in 1956, leading it down the yellow brick road to success. What you may not know is that the leading man…I mean dog, got paid a whopping $125 a week, which is equivalent to 2,700 dollars today. Man, if I only had a dog! Also, in the Tin Man’s song “If I Only Had a Heart” the actress who voiced the line “Wherefore art thou, Romeo?” was Adriana Caselotti, who was the same voice actress in the first Walt Disney animated feature…Snow White.

Also today, Rob Halford of Judas Priest turns 74, and Gene Simmons of KISS is 76.

Boerne ISD has been closely watching the courts as Senate Bill 10 is set to take effect on September 1st. The “Ten Commandments” bill, as it’s come to be known, has been temporarily blocked by District Court Judge Fred Biery for 11 districts, not including BISD. Communications Director Dr. Maggie Dominguez has stated that the District will always comply with the law, and although they have not budgeted for the printing of the commandments, the bill states that it must be provided at no cost. Depending on how the suit proceeds will determine if the signs go up in the classrooms here in Boerne. 

Some news out of Fair Oaks Ranch: The Beam for the Gateway feature has officially arrived! Installation is expected today, and although there are no closures planned, drivers should expect crews on site. Also starting today is construction on the Waterline Replacement Project, which will start at Willow Wind. As crews move along, they will install temporary traffic signals to direct traffic through lane closures, and there might be brief delays. Overall, the impact is expected to be minimal, but please be patient if it takes a little longer than expected. 

And in case you didn’t hear, Jac’s Personal Touch will be closing its doors on the last day of September after being in business in Boerne since 1989.  Bill Spruce has always managed the counter, and Jac Spruce is the one with the eye to decorate and stock all the unique items for your home.  Their iconic logo of 3 Spruce Trees didn’t represent the Spruce family…they’ll be the first to tell you it’s the Trinity…and how blessed they’ve been and the love they’ve received from the community.

The reason for closing is that Jac needs to be with Mr. Bill Spruce at home and get him back to health after an episode, but is in rehab and Jac says he’s doing better each day.
