Headlines: Mavericks officially became the 23rd member of the NBA/Today Is National Day Of Prayer/ BFD Volunteer Recruits Complete 6 Month Journey
It’s Thursday, May 1st.
On this day in 1980, the Dallas Mavericks officially became the twenty-third member of the National Basketball Association, when owner Donald Carter's Dallas National Basketball Association, Inc., was awarded a franchise by NBA commissioner Lawrence O'Brien.
I’m Jeff Flinn of the Boerne Star, sitting in for Boerne Radio’s Baron Wiley.
Today is National Day of Prayer. Established by Congress in 1952, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. Boerne Prays, a local organization, is behind the second annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, which gets underway at 7:30 a.m. In the Cana Ballroom. Tickets are available online for $15. At noon, there will be a Community gathering for prayer on the Main Plaza. All are welcome to attend.
The newest batch of volunteer recruits for the Boerne Fire Department marked a major milestone this past weekend, as the 11 firefighters wrapped up their academy training with live fire exercises. The training, held at the San Antonio College Live Fire Training Facility, was the final — and toughest — part of a six-month journey.
The completion of the academy is especially meaningful at a time when fire departments across the country are seeing fewer volunteer firefighters. To combat this trend, the BFD has worked hard to build and maintain a strong volunteer culture. Congratulations, men and women, for stepping up when you’re needed most. Your Boerne ISD elementary school lunch menu today: chicken nachos with Spanish rice; beefy nachos with Spanish rice; or a fresh turkey and cheese sub sandwich. Just the way I like it.
This has been Jeff Flinn with the news of the day, right here on Boerne Radio 103.9 FM. Have a tremendous day.
