It’s Thursday May 16th. 

And on this date in 1929, the first Academy Awards are hosted in Hollywood and the Oscar for Best Film goes to Wings - which starred Clara Bow and a young Gary Cooper.  It was a World War 1 story that remains the only silent film to win best picture.  The other interesting thing is that the film was shot on location at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas.

The Texas Department of Transportation AKA TXDOT put out the press release with a good news bad news announcement…

The good news is Loop 1604 will have 6 lanes open before next week…The bad news is another weekend of major closures across Loop 1604 at I-10 - it all starts again at 9 on Friday night and back to the normal crazy at 5am on Monday.

1604 main lanes from La Cantera Parkway to Stone Oak Parkway will be closed, but the section between Vance Jackson to Stone Oak will reopen by Saturday night.

And for the 13th year in a row, the City of Boerne has been given the title of a 2023 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. In order to qualify, the city must have a board dedicated to tree preservation, host an Arbor Day observance, have a tree care ordinance and spend at least $2 per capita on forestry. This honor points to the dedication of the Parks and Rec department over the past 13 years, as they have planted over 1800 trees in that time. 

The Boerne Fire Department has officially put up the new sign for Fire Station No. 2, which is set to open next year. The Department, alongside Mayor Richie and the City Council, held a land dedication ceremony yesterday morning in honor of the new firehouse. Construction will begin soon after the plans are finished.
