Headlines:  O’Hare Born On This Date in 1914 / BKCEDC Earns Excellence Award / Dementia Research Institute Coming To Texas / Free Dogs From KC Animal Shelter

It’s Thursday March 13th.

And born on this date in 1914 was Edward “Butch” O’Hare. O’Hare’s father was a lawyer who worked for Al Capone in Chicago, and was later murdered after testifying against the famous gangster.  In 1942, Butch single-handedly attacked nine Japanese bombers, shooting down six, saving the USS Lexington.   For that, O’Hare earned the Navy’s first Medal of Honor during World War II presented by President Roosevelt.  O’Hare International Airport was named after him in 1949.

The Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation was recently recognized by the Texas Economic Development Corporation as an Organization of Excellence. They are one of only 72 organizations across the state to receive this distinction, which were chosen based on their desired threshold of professionalism, undergoing trainings and organizational effectiveness. Congrats to President and CEO Amy Story and her great team.

The Boerne Star reported on a new Senate Action that would create a dementia research institute right here in the Lone Star State. Senator Huffman from Houston said Texas already has the third-most dementia patients in the country — almost half a million — and last year state Medicare costs for dementia care topped $4 billion. The goal of the institute is to draw the brightest minds in dementia care to Texas, hoping to find the causes and cures for different types of dementia, from Alzheimer’s to Lewy Body.

The Kendall County Animal Shelter is having free puppy adoptions until St. Patty’s Day! The Shelter has plenty of dogs that are looking for a home, and with no fees, now is the perfect time to adopt.  The Kendall County Animal Shelter is out on the east bound lane of I-10 just before you get to the Kendall County Youth Ag and Equestrian Center.   And by the way there’s a great dog park behind the animal shelter.  Wanna go for a ride?
