It’s Thursday June 5th.

And it was on this date in 2004 our 40th President of the United States passed away at the age of 93 - Ronald Wilson Reagan.   It was also on this date in 1968 that Bobby Kennedy was fatally shot by 24-year-old Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after winning the California primary.  He died the next day.

This Wednesday’s edition of the Boerne Star featured the story of a local Boerne girl who just received a lifesaving surgery in Barcelona. When Acaiyah Dandridge was 7 years old, she was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation I- a rare neurological condition where the brain grows into the spinal cord. Now 10, Acaiyah needed a surgery that no doctor in the U.S. would perform. Through fundraisers in the community, the family was able to raise $34,000 and flew out last week. And the report is the surgery went well. We will let you know of any updates that we hear from the Dandridge family.

The Boerne Star also reported on the Boerne ISD Aquatics Center and its ongoing construction. The contractor is still not finished with the Center, but Superintendent Dr. Craft says there won’t be any swimming activity for some time anyway. Once it’s completed, the finished product will be a 25-meter pool with at least 9 to 11 competition lanes and two one-meter diving boards. And if you live in Herff Ranch we’ll soon get our second lane back on Herff Ranch Boulevard.

The Boerne Chapter of the Sons of Liberty gave out two scholarships to graduating seniors in Kendall County for their essays on lesser-known founding fathers. Hunter Bradshaw from Comfort High School wrote on Francis Hopkins, who signed the Declaration of Independence and was an artist, satirical writer and the so called real designer of the American Flag. Brawshaw was awarded $3,000 for his essay, while the runner up, Diego Perez from Boerne High, won $1,500. Both graduates will be attending UTSA in the fall.
