Headlines: Juneteenth / 103 Year Old WWII Vet Pedro Vera Earns French Legion Of Honor / Dayna Comley Named F.O.R. Elementary Principal / Ron and Kathy Fielding Give $5000 To HCFS
It’s Thursday June 19th.
It was on this date in 1865 that news of the end of the Civil War finally made its way to Galveston Texas - the War was over - and slaves were freed with the passing of the 13th Amendment. The holiday, known as Juneteenth, became a federal holiday in 2021 when Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, but has been honored in Texas since 1938.
I’m Baron Wiley.
Yesterday if you heard sirens wailing down Main Street in the afternoon with multiple first responder cars, trucks, and supporters in a slow roll, that was because they were heading to Veterans Plaza to escort and honor a true American hero right here in Boerne. Private First Class Pedro Vera at the age of 103 was awarded the French Legion of Honor - the highest honor France bestows upon Americans for liberating France as Pedro Vera landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in 1944 as an ambulance driver. Boerne’s Veteran Plaza was filled with family and patriots alike to celebrate the bravery of the hero, and to honor his service to the United States and France.
Boerne ISD announced yesterday that Dayna Comley has been named the principal of Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary at the last Board meeting. Comley is in her 20th year of education but joined Boerne ISD in 2016 as a teacher at Boerne Middle School North. She has served as Assistant Principal at both Currington and Voss Middle School, and is expected to begin at Fair Oaks on July 21st.
