Headlines: WM is Flipping Out With Bigger Bins / SAM’s Kids Need Your Horns / Emma Puente Wins Spanish Spelling Bee / Fire Aid at AMC / #GetPinched on February 3rd!
It’s Friday January 17th.
It was on this date in 1929 that Popeye made his world debut in the comic strip Thimble Theatre. He was hired by Castor Oyl in the strip, and when asked if he was a sailor, his first line ever was “Ja think I’m a cowboy?” The Popeye character was based on a real person named Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, who was unusually strong, had a characteristic pipe, and a love for fist-fighting.
The City of Boerne has renewed its annual agreement with WM, previously known as Waste Management, and the update introduces several enhancements. Starting on the 27th, WM will replace the current 64-gallon recycling carts for 96 gallon carts. All you need to do is leave your cart out on your normal pickup day, and WM will replace it, hopefully finishing by February 7th. They also are streamlining their service so that recycling and trash pickup occurs on the same day! If you have a disability, you may qualify for door-to-truck collection, and if you are over the age of 65, you are eligible for a senior discount.
Attention all former band geeks! SAM’s Kids is looking for people to donate their old instruments for BISD students in need. If you haven’t dusted off the old tuba in a while, donate it; plus you can deduct the donation off of your taxes next year. If you’re interested, you can contact SAM’s Kids via Janet D’Spain from Boerne ISD at 830-357-2006.
Shoutout to Curington Elementary’s Emma Puente for winning the Boerne ISD Spanish Spelling Bee.
In music news, there is a second Fireaid taking place to help our neighbors in California on January 30th, and will include Boerne Radio artists such as Stevie Nicks, Sting, Joni Mitchell, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dave Matthews, John Mayor and Lady Gaga. And for the younger crowd, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, Gracie Abrams and Tate McRae will also perform. Besides being on streaming channels and satellite radio stations, it’ll also be at 70 AMC theatres across the country. No word yet if the AMC in Boerne will be one.
