It’s Friday December 5th. 

And born on this date in 1782 was Martin Van Buren - the 8th President of the United States…he also served as the 8th Vice-President, the Secretary of State, the Governor of New York, and as a US Senator from New York.  He was blamed for the depression of 1837 and his nickname in the press was Martin Van Ruin.  Plus he rejected Texas’ admission to the Union. And now he’s dead.

Country artist Gary Allen turns 57 today, Jim Messina of Loggins and Messina is 77, and in Boerne today is Dr. Peter Leininger’s birthday.  Vernie Murray from Boerne, Glen Boehm, Dinah Johnson, and Debbie McNeal all celebrate tomorrow but we salute you today.

Yesterday, just after midnight and through the morning, multiple utility poles began sparking or catching fire in the Bergheim area. Fire crews responded to each incident with swiftness, with several units on site until the late morning. Pedernales Electric is currently investigating the cause of these fires, but at this time the cause remains unknown.  Mr. Philip Ochoa suggested that solar flares have been very high and are known to disrupt power.

Over in Sisterdale, the Christmas Tree fundraiser is back for the Volunteer Fire Department. Today through Sunday you can pick up the perfect tree while also supporting a good cause from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. Each purchase supports the team buying new tools, receiving advanced training and brand new equipment. While you’re there, snack on homemade cookies, drink some hot chocolate and take a photo with the vintage brush truck. 

And the 38th annual Weihnachts Parade is happening tomorrow at 6 pm with over 100 lighted floats making their way down the Hill Country Mile.  Make sure to wave at our friends at Hill Country Animal League who are in their mobile sleigh right in front of Santa Claus.  Main will be closed to traffic starting at 3 and the theme for this year is Saddles and Sleigh Bells.

Programming alert, tonight your Greyhounds are in the regional finals at Alamo Stadium against Alamo Heights.
