Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week will take place this year beginning on Sunday, August 8th, 2021. That’s according to State Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Franchot said this year it’s more important than ever to shop at local businesses.

“We’ve had a lot of small businesses go out of business — the ones that are still open, we need to patronize and we need to go down and, either remotely, because a lot of them now you can shop virtually, or in person,” he explained.

Franchot said the tax-free applies to an unlimited amount of items, as long as each item is less than $100.

“If it’s a $99 dollar item, you do get the sales tax waiver,” he said. “It’s not just back to school, it is for anybody.”

Tax-Free Week will end on Saturday, August 14th.

Franchot said the Comptroller’s Office is also partnering with the Maryland Retailers Association to offer two students a scholarship.

“We’ve asked them to give us a 60-second or less video. We get hundreds of them, and they’re very creative,” he said. “Either you’re buying a tax-free item or you’re helping a store. We’re asking them to send it in by August 15th and we’re going to pick one or two.”
