NFL players overwhelmingly prefer natural grass, citing comfort and player-safety concerns, even as the league maintains that recent injury data show no significant difference between grass and artificial turf. The NFL and NFLPA are moving toward stricter performance-based standards for all surfaces, while Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium illustrates the challenge: its grass field met league compliance requirements but developed significant divots and had to be replaced before the regular-season opener.
