President Trump said US officials had a “very good” meeting with Iranian representatives, a rare direct encounter that offers a fresh opportunity to restart talks to end the nearly seven-month war. Trump didn’t provide details on who participated in the meeting, but referred to his special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who sat alongside the president.

The US administration has signaled a renewed effort to end the war in the Middle East, with Trump claiming the conflict will end just after the November US midterm elections, if not before. Earlier on Tuesday in his UN address, Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran if its officials don’t strike a deal. Meantime, President Trump dismissed calls for an international agreement to put guardrails around the development of artificial intelligence, brushing off concerns about the dangers of frontier models going rogue.
