America is at risk of relinquishing its global leadership in biopharmaceuticals. Haphazard cuts to funding academic research, political attacks on science and misguided threats to the risk-reward calculus that buttresses innovation undermine our strategic preeminence in healthcare and medicines. At the same time, China is advancing its own agenda. If the United States’ biotech strategy is not acutely resuscitated, we risk depriving our nation of the oxygen that fuels biomedical entrepreneurship, economic vitality, and ultimately national security.
